Has shown ability in bumpers/maiden hurdles but didn't see his race out when fourth in a 7-runner novice at Lingfield (23f, soft) in January. Will make a chaser in time but ought to be more competitive now tackling handicap hurdles.

Point winner who showed fair form when placed over hurdles and fences for Harry Fry. Had another breathing operation prior to falling on debut for Simon Hodgson and ran no sort of race on final start for that yard. Bit to prove making handicap hurdle debut for new trainer (has ridden him regularly).

Made a successful hurdling debut in 4-y-o event at Strasbourg (17.9f, heavy) in November 2022 for Emmanuel Clayeux but pulled up on UK/stable debut following 2 years off the track at Lingfield last time. Upped in trip with questions to answer following a further 9-month absence.

Course winner proved inconsistent last season, his best effort coming when a narrow second here (20f) but ended his campaign with a lesser effort when pulled up at Newbury in March. Return to this track offers some hope on his return.

Showed fair form when runner-up twice in France last spring and showed something like that form when runner-up over C&D in May 2024. Lightly raced for his age and yard can ready one first time up. Worth a market check.

Fair hurdler/chaser got back on track after a break when third over hurdles at Exeter (21.6f, heavy) on penultimate start. Disappointed at the same track on final start of last season but will handle conditions and is one to consider if the market expects a bounce back.

Winner of back-to-back chases at this track (heavy) last winter and clearly wasn't 100% when pulled up on final start of last season. Still a maiden over hurdles and may prove better off back over fences.

Narrowly beaten by a subsequent winner at Worcester (2½m) in August but wasn't in the same form over the same C&D last month. Has race-fitness on his side and looks worth another chance back up in trip.

Consistent type on testing ground over hurdles, his best effort of last season when finishing second in a 7-runner handicap at Exeter (23.1f) on reappearance. Well held in first-time cheekpieces (now removed) returned to chasing last time but better expected back over hurdles.

Placed in Irish points and had shaped like a stayer under Rules prior to running no sort of race on his qualifying run, when soon off the bridle. Back up in trip and remains to be seen if first-time headgear has an impact on handicap debut.

Forecasts

Mister Barclay (11/4), Valens Bruyee (16/5), Seatoit (6/1), Bataillon (8/1), The Scorpion King (17/2), La Higuera (9/1), Cooleenymore (12/1), Emorelle (12/1), Royal Rhythm (14/1), Great Name That (16/1), Ilot De L'isle (28/1)

Verdict

MISTER BARCLAY is a consistent type on testing ground over hurdles and ran his best race on reappearance last season. He's fancied to make a winning return, though Royal Rhythm is the sole runner with race fitness on his side and is feared as the main danger. Valens Bruyee goes well at this track and could be in the mix if back to his best on first start of the season, while Bataillon is one to note in the betting returning from an absence.
