Backed as if defeat was out of the question on debut in a Market Rasen bumper (16.6f, good) last month and he duly delivered the goods, pulling clear of the rest with the runner-up. Open to improvement and bold show likely under a penalty.

Wooded gelding. Closely related to a winner on Flat and half-brother to French hurdler/chaser Al Nakhil. Dam unraced. Yard saddled the winner of this race last year and he's one to note in the betting.

Nathaniel colt. Dam, 17f/19f hurdle winner, closely related to useful hurdler/smart chaser (stayed 3m) Stolen Silver. Market should point the way.

Showed ability when sixth in a 10-runner bumper on his introduction at Huntingdon (15.8f, good to firm), but will need to take a significant step forward in order to take this.

Decent Flat pedigree and it'll be interesting to see how he shapes up in the betting, but jockey bookings point to Orioncaleyjags being the stable first-string.

Capri gelding. Dam, lightly raced over hurdles, 1m-1¼m winner who stayed 1½m on Flat. Yard 0-27 in bumpers in recent seasons and he's probably best watched on debut.
|
Timeform
Maxios gelding out of an unraced daughter of useful 7f/1m winner Glowing, from family of Derby third Beat Hollow and Irish Oaks winner Wemyss Bight. Top yard has made a good start to the season and this one needs close attention in the betting.

Choeur Du Nord gelding. Half-brother to French chaser Kelvic Allen. Dam French bumper/2¼m hurdle winner. Appealing on paper for yard with a 22% strike rate in bumpers in recent seasons.

Out of a 21f-25f hurdle/chase winner, herself a half-sister to useful hurdler Gusda and fair hurdle winner/fairly useful chaser Thomond. May well need more time and distance, but needs a close look in the betting all the same.

Timeform
Shirocco gelding. Dam, maiden over hurdles/fences, half-sister to useful bumper winner/smart hurdler Queens Brook. Another who will probably show himself in a better light when faced with a stiffer test over jumps further down the line.

Brother to a couple of winners on the Flat and shaped well third starting out in a bumper at Exeter (13.2f, good) recently. Could have a big part to play, particularly if he settles better this time.

Forecasts

Pureis King (9/4), Molly's Lad (10/3), Maxios Aurelius (5/1), Merlin Allen (6/1), Garrincha (10/1), Jessmarvel (12/1), Campfield Flyer (12/1), Receipt (22/1), Berkshire Woody (25/1), Power Quest (25/1), Orioncaleyjags (33/1), Fridaysman (40/1), Mad For Tar (40/1)

Verdict

Newcomers MERLIN ALLEN and Maxios Aurelius both make plenty of appeal on paper and confidence behind either in the betting would look significant. As things stand, preference is for the former, who is out of a bumper winner and represents a yard with a good record in this sphere. Pureis King landed the odds on debut at Market Rasen and is greatly respected, despite his penalty, and Power Quest will also be a threat, provided he settles better than he did first time out at Exeter.
