8-y-o who reached a smart level over fences as a novice, scoring at Carlisle last autumn and went like best horse at the weights when second in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham in March. Ran out of steam late when fifth in Irish National final start and no doubt there's a big race in him from this mark.

Useful chaser who was successful twice as a novice (at up to 19.4f), including in Grade 2 company. Didn't find things going entirely to plan in a light 2024/25 campaign but he appeals as the type to be well suited by demands of this race and his record fresh is another plus.

Quite lightly raced since landing brace of 3m handicaps in 2022/23 campaign but hard to knock his consistency last term, placed on all 4 starts, finding his stamina ebbing away only late on when third in Scottish National (31.8f) in April. Resumes with yard in good order and considered back in trip.

Progressive over hurdles and further steps forward over fences last winter, landing brace of handicaps at around 21f on first 2 starts. Failed to complete next 2 starts (bled latterly) but he's still low-mileage in this sphere and booking of Sean Bowen catches the eye on return.

Veteran who landed a big-field Festival handicap at Cheltenham in 2023 and highlighted his versatility with a brace of victories on Flat at up to 2m last summer. Mixed bag thereafter but his reappearance run in last month's Cesarewitch ought to have blown the cobwebs away returned to chasing.

Took his form to a new level last season, winning first 3 starts of the campaign, cutting a fine sight when landing this race 12 months ago. Went off the boil during second half of the campaign but undergone another wind operation ahead of this and a bold bid could well be on the cards.

Ended his time with Patrick Neville out of sorts but, having been picked up very cheaply, proved at least as good as ever for this yard with a brace of wins in March. Runner-up all 3 starts since, albeit his latest in a match at Wetherby 24 days ago some way below his best. This another tough ask.

French import who looked good when winning a small-field graduation chase at Ascot in 2023/24. Winless since but shaped better than the distance beaten in first-time cheekpieces (retained) when midfield in the Topham over C&D when last seen in April (chance-ending mistake 2 out). Interesting.

Ended last season with a fine second in the Foxhunters at the National Meeting in April and shaped encouragingly after 5 months off when fifth of 9 in handicap chase at Worcester (20f, soft) 54 days ago. That ought to have blown the cobwebs away and this 9-y-o certainly isn't out of things.

Shaped better than bare result when finishing midfield in this race 12 months ago prior to ending lengthy losing run in Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle. Went off the boil during second half of last season but mark has eased ahead of return and no surprise to see him give a good account.

Landed a brace of handicap chases (5 months apart) during first half of last season and remained in form thereafter, twice a runner-up prior to making a few errors when fourth at Haydock (19.9f) in February. Off since and whilst this is tougher, his record fresh is certainly a positive.

Returned to form from out of the blue for his current yard when landing 9-runner handicap chase at Worcester (20f) in September. However, produced a performance far more in keeping with his recent record when pulled up at Chepstow 4 weeks ago. Others preferred.

Ayr maiden hurdle winner who responded well to the fitting of cheekpieces when belatedly off the mark in 5-runner handicap chase at Carlisle (20f) in April, capitalising on the ease in grade. Has been prone to mistakes though, and this asks a bigger question starting out for new connections.

Dual chase scorer in 2023 who responded well to demands of this test when runner-up behind King Turgeon in this race 12 months ago. Best effort since when runner-up at Market Rasen (21.4f) in June but below that level on 2 of his 3 subsequent runs. Handicapper has afforded him a chance, however.

Scored twice in hunter chases in spring of last year prior to finishing a good third in this race 12 months ago. Far from disgraced next 2 starts and whilst he disappointed in the Eider Chase when last seen in February, no surprise to see him primed for a big run back here with blinkers back on.

Likeable sort who won 2 of his first 3 starts over fences and respectable efforts on first 2 starts back last season. Absent since pulling up at Newton Abbot (21f, heavy) in April and whilst he's performed well fresh in the past, he'll have to be firmly at the top of his game to feature on return.

Veteran chaser who made a positive start for his current yard last term, scoring at Newcastle (23f) before a very good third at Perth in April. Went with plenty of zest after 6 months off when third in veterans' handicap here 13 days ago but this tougher again from out of weights. Tongue strap on.

Forecasts

Jet Plane (4/1), Colonel Harry (6/1), Excello (7/1), White Rhino (8/1), Johnnywho (17/2), King Turgeon (9/1), Our Power (10/1), Vintage Fizz (12/1), Happy And Fine (16/1), Gaboriot (18/1), Nocte Volatus (20/1), Mahons Glory (22/1), If Not For Dylan (22/1), Frero Banbou (28/1), Seddon (28/1), Bleu D'enfer (40/1), Mount Tempest (80/1)

Verdict

WHITE RHINO bled when pulled up in the Grimthorpe at Doncaster when last seen in March, yet his profile was most positive prior to that and he could be worth siding with to bounce back on return with the booking of Sean Bowen very much catching the eye. Sam Thomas has made a very bright start to the campaign and his Our Power is another to consider. Last year's winner King Turgeon, Johnnywho and Colonel Harry complete the shortlist.
