Relished the increase in stamina when an emphatic winner of 14f Chester handicap last autumn. Had been on the up this season (fifth in the Chester Cup) but proved a disappointment in the Northumberland plate. Better than he showed there and conditions no problem returning to turf.

Had an exceptional year in 2024, winning 5 times on the Flat and once over hurdles (majority of those wins coming with give in the ground). Hasn't been seen to best effect in quicker than ideal conditions this season but makes appeal back down to his last winning mark with ground now in his favour.

In fine form this season, latest win at Epsom in April and shaped as if still in good form (didn't help his rider by hanging left) when respectable third of 7 in handicap at Newmarket (12f, good, 9/2) 12 days ago, running on late and finished with running left. Claims back up in distance.

A fairly useful hurdler/chaser who was held back by his jumping on final starts for Gordon Elliott. Proved he can still mix it on the Flat when seventh of 20 in handicap at Newcastle (16.2f). Cheekpieces on first time in this sphere and hasn't been with the excellent James Owen yard for long.

Progrssive since being stepped up to 1½m+, making it 3 wins in last 4 starts at Hamilton (13f) in May but found his sequence coming to an end over the same C&D the following month, not seen to best effect having been snatched up 2f out. Tougher race but may well get back on track on this ground.

Gradually progressive as a 3-y-o (career best when winning on heavy ground at Nottingham over this trip on final start last season) and following a break, turned in her best effort of the season when third of 8 in handicap at Haydock (14f, good) 6 days ago. Has a chance with ground in her favour.

Winner over this trip at Salisbury in May and produced a career best when second of 19 in handicap at Newcastle (16.2f) 26 days ago, well positioned and looked to be outstayed by the winner. Drop back in trip makes sense and should go well.

2 wins from 5 runs this year and back on track with a career best when winning 10-runner handicap at Haydock (14f, good) 19 days ago, finding plenty off the bridle and just holding on late. Should go on improving but may want even further than this.

Has returned as good as ever this season, Latest win at Kempton in May in first time blinkers and improved again when sixth of 19 in handicap at Newcastle (16.2f, 14/1) 26 days ago, not ideally placed. Respected but slight question mark about the slower ground on his return to turf.

Forecasts

Miller Spirit (3/1), Pole Star (7/2), King's Scholar (5/1), Pique' (15/2), Who's Glen (15/2), Shajak (17/2), Asgard's Captain (14/1), Caprelo (16/1), Tryfan (16/1)

Verdict

MILLER SPIRIT thrived in similar conditions last year and back on his last winning mark, he can open his account for the season. Tryfan was better than ever when runner-up on the all-weather last time, despite being outstayed. He should go well back in trip, while Pique' could be a danger also having turned in her best effort of the season at Haydock last week. Caprelo is in the form of his life since the fitting of blinkers but this ground is a question mark.
