Much improved for current yard, successful 5 times on Flat before also winning on handicap hurdle debut at Southwell in June. Unable to land the odds when third at Worcester (good to firm) last time, though unsuited by way race developed. Respected.

Fairly useful bumper winner when trained by Willie Mullins. Not much impact in maiden/novice hurdles but in cheekpieces has offered more sent handicapping last 2 starts, third of 7 in novice event at Bangor (good) 40 days ago. May yet do better.

Scored on the Flat in October and placed in handicap hurdles next 2 starts. Pulled up when last seen in this sphere in February, but after a break he's run well on the level the last twice, second at Nottingham 20 days ago. Capable of being in the mix.

Won a Flat maiden on heavy ground for Peter Chapple-Hyam but missed 2024 and sold for only 2,000 gns ahead of going hurdling. Modest form in 3 maidens in this sphere, before well held on the level at York 18 days ago. Has work to do on handicap hurdle debut.

Without a win since bumper on debut, but turned in most convincing display over hurdles when second of 12 in novice handicap at Stratford (good) last month, finishing well and pulling clear of remainder. Enters calculations on the back of latest effort.

Fair maiden on the Flat in Ireland for Joseph O'Brien. Without a win in 7 attempts over hurdles but placed on first 2 starts in handicaps, runner-up at Huntingdon in May. Went backwards from that effort at Stratford (good) last time, though she's not ruled out.

Bumper winner who produced best effort over hurdles when second of 16 in handicap at Taunton (19f) in January. Below form on soft ground next time, but back on track when third at Fontwell (17.7f, good) in April. Tongue tie added on first run since leaving Jeremy Scott.

Offered little in a bumper and well held all 3 completed starts over hurdles, though some late headway when seventh of 9 in novice at Worcester (good to soft) 39 days ago. Plenty more needed as he makes handicap debut.

Long-standing maiden but showed no ill-effects of her fall 3 weeks earlier when runner-up to an improver in 7-runner handicap at Market Rasen (good to firm) in June. However, ran one of lesser races at this C&D (good) 8 days ago.

Fair winner of the Flat and ran up to best over hurdles when second in novice handicap at Uttoxeter (good) in May. Left poorly placed when third in novice at Bangor (good to firm) 25 days ago, so she could fare better back in handicap company.

Multiple Flat scorer who stepped up on hurdles reappearance when second at Newton Abbot (good) in June. Filled the same position back there (soft) 9 days later, before a below-par effort at Stratford (18.7f) 15 days ago. Not written off back down in trip.

Well held in bumper and down the field in 3 qualifying run over hurdles, tried in tongue tie when tailed off in a Hereford novice (19.7f, good) in May. Major improvement required sent handicapping on first start since leaving Fergal O'Brien.

Just poor form so far over hurdles, including in first-time cheekpieces when fourth of 6 in novice handicap at Fontwell (19.1f, good) last month. Looks to be up against it from 3 lb out of the weights.

Forecasts

Monticello (13/8), Diesel Line (11/2), Carlton (11/2), Portcammon (13/2), Morandi Second (7/1), Basilette (10/1), Granny B (16/1), Hill Station (20/1), Northern Rose (25/1), Window Of Time (28/1), Bara Tara (40/1), Banny Hill Lass (66/1), Sharona (80/1), Millsbridge (125/1)

Verdict

MONTICELLO proved a different proposition on first start for current yard when making a winning handicap debut at this C&D last week and, with further progress to come, he could be capable of following up under a penalty. He is preferred to Carlton, who isn't taken lightly given the improvement he has shown for James Owen, with Basilette also considered.
