Won a pair of novice hurdles at up to 19f in February. Disappointed in a couple of Sandown handicap hurdles in the spring and failed to complete on return after a wind op through no fault of his own at Cheltenham (21f) last month (badly hampered 3 out). Now attentions are turned to fences.

Winning hurdle debut at Wincanton last season and better form in defeat since, notably his excellent fourth of 17 in very competitive EBF Final at Sandown in March, looking well suited by the step up to 2½m. Will make a chaser so warrants respect on return.

Much improved last term and a three-time scorer, signing off with a 2m4f Lingfield handicap success. Should make a chaser, but dropped away quickly on his first try at it on return at Ffos Las (16f, soft) in October. This should reveal more.

Irish point winner who was runner-up on bumper debut last November. Much better for hurdles bow when landing maiden at Wincanton in March but failed to fire under a penalty at Ffos Las the following month. Makes return/chase debut and impossible to discount for a top yard.

Most progressive sent handicapping over hurdles last season, winning his first 3 starts, and in receipt of weight-for-age allowance he was impressive when making a successful seasonal/chase debut at Bangor (20.3f, heavy) in October. 12 lb rise to contend with but capable of following up.

Progressive over hurdles at this course last season, including a maiden win around 2m and a near miss in a handicap over 18.5f. Resumed where he left off when good second at Newton Abbot on chase bow/return in October and likely to improve on that.

Winning Irish pointer who followed suit in 2m3f novice at Fontwell on Rules debut in January. Yet to build on that but could do now sent chasing after 7 months off (has had a breathing operation in the interim).

Forecasts

Billytherealbigred (6/4), Dartmoor Pirate (4/1), Royal Jewel (9/2), Fire Flyer (13/2), Ito Ditto (11/1), Risk De Pluie (12/1), Denemethy (18/1)

Verdict

BILLYTHEREALBIGRED couldn't have been much more impressive on his return/chase debut at Bangor in October and, with further improvement anticipated, he's fancied to defy a 12 lb rise and remain unbeaten in this sphere. Second choice is Royal Jewel, who resumed where he left off last winter when finishing runner-up on chase debut at Newton Abbot recently, with Dartmoor Pirate rounding off the shortlist.
