Smart horse who was a respectable 4½ lengths third of 13 to Military Law in Al Maktoum Classic at this course (9.4f) 28 days ago but not easy to make a case for at this level.

Smart colt. Four wins from 7 runs last year. Picked up the pieces when very good 4¾ lengths third of 12 to National Treasure in Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream (9f) 63 days ago. Frame claims if there's a pace collapse.

Dual Grade 1 winner for Bob Baffert but unlikely to reach that level again for this yard, below form when 11¼ lengths seventh of 14 to Senor Buscador in Saudi Cup (33/1) on stable debut 35 days ago.

Most impressive when making all in the UAE Derby here a year ago. Decent sixth in Kentucky Derby after before resuming progress when second in Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita. Respectable 2½ lengths fifth to Senor Buscador in Saudi Cup on return and better expected now.

Prolific winner in Kazakhstan/Russia in 2022/23 and 2 from 2 for this yard here in January, putting himself firmly in the picture for this when wide-margin winner of Group 1 Al Maktoum Challenge.

Surprise winner of 13-runner Al Maktoum Classic at this course (9.4f) 28 days ago by length from Walk of Stars but likely to come up short here even with a repeat of that form.

Lightly-raced 4-y-o whose 3-y-o season was cut short by injury, but made up for lost time when winning Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap (10f, 32/10) 27 days ago. Needs to take another step forward but has the profile of one who will do better still. Tongue tied.

Has taken form to another level as a 6-y-o, going close in the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream before recording first success at this level when nailing Ushba Tesoro by a head in Saudi Cup. The stronger the pace the better his chance.

Has proved a revelation since switched to dirt and came from well off the pace to win this last year. Almost pulled off similar tactics when just denied by Senor Buscador in Saudi Cup 5 weeks ago and another bold bid is on the cards.

Forecasts

Kabirkhan (15/8), Derma Sotogake (7/2), Ushba Tesoro (11/2), Senor Buscador (8/1), Newgate (8/1), Laurel River (9/1), Wilson Tesoro (16/1), Crupi (20/1), Dura Erede (50/1), Defunded (100/1), Clapton (100/1), Military Law (100/1)

Verdict

DERMA SOTOGAKE was most impressive when making all in the UAE Derby on this card last season and proved himself to be one of the best dirt performers around when runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Classic. He shaped better than the bare result when behind Senor Buscador and Ushba Tesoro in the Saudi Cup on his return last month and the son of Mind Your Biscuits can come out on top this time.
