Made a winning handicap debut upped to 1½m at the York Dante meeting and coped with the step up to 14.2f in Group company when third at Royal Ascot next time (Circle of Fire 1¼ lengths adrift in fourth). Drop back in trip shouldn't be an issue and this unexposed colt is just about the one to beat.

Reappearance second to Castle Way in a listed race at Newmarket in May represents solid form. Hasn't kicked on from that in 2 subsequent starts, albeit he wasn't far behind Chesspiece when fourth in the Queen's Vase last time and should again make his presence felt.

Winner of 1m Haydock maiden on debut last September before taking a big step forward when third in a French Group 1 the following month. Disappointing when behind Circle of Fire on return at Newmarket but he remains of strong interest in view of his 2-y-o promise.

Fairly useful juvenile who scored twice around 1m last summer. Not disgraced in pattern company on first 2 starts of this season safely held in a Royal Ascot handicap last time and she has plenty to find with each of her 4 rivals here.

Useful filly who returned to action with a good second in Group 3 at Saint Cloud. No threat in the Musidora/Oaks next 2 starts but back on track when fifth of 17 in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot last month and a repeat of that form would give her a fighting chance.

Verdict

The Crisfords saddled the winner of this in 2022 and can repeat the dose with CHESSPIECE, who was acquired by Godolphin after winning a York handicap and his subsequent third to a potential star future stayer at Royal Ascot was no backward step. Salt Bay is greatly respected on account of his 2-y-o promise and will be a big threat if putting his disappointing Newmarket reappearance behind him. Circle of Fire wasn't far behind Chesspiece at Royal Ascot and has claims, along with Sea of Roses.
