Useful hurdler who improved to make a winning chase debut in good style at Carlisle (2m) on return in November. Matched that when only narrowly denied in 19f Wetherby novice handicap since and remains open to improvement in this sphere.

Successful twice from half-a-dozen starts over hurdles and duly left chase debut form well behind when landing a 5-runner Wetherby handicap (15.2f). Appeared to have plenty left up his sleeve that day and it's unlikely that a 6 lb rise will be enough to stop him.

Fairyhouse maiden hurdle winner last February but done little wright since, failing to complete on 4 of his 6 subsequent starts, including both attempts over fences (unseated on each occasion). Hopes pinned on first-time cheekpieces working the oracle here.

Landed 2¾m Cartmel maiden hurdle in 2021 and good start over fences following 14 months off when going close at Sedgefield (21f) in January. Coped well with drop to 2m when scoring at Carlisle since but good more will be needed here from 5 lb out of the handicap.

Forecasts

Bass Rock (13/8), Richmond Lake (7/4), One Fine Man (11/4), Peaceful Sunday (14/1)

Verdict

An intriguing clash between promising novices RICHMOND LAKE and Bass Rock. It was hard not to be impressed by the way Richmond Lake did the job at Wetherby where he cosily accounted for a number of more experienced, battle-hardened chasers, and he looks the one to be on. One Fine Man has much more on his plate compared to when getting off the mark over fences at Carlisle but he is still clear third choice given Peaceful Sunday's downward spiral subsequent to winning over hurdles last winter.
