Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by idling on the run-in at Newton Abbot (21f) last time, having looked firmly in control at the final fence. Major stamina query back up in trip here.

Off the mark in this sphere over C&D in November 2019. Added to that on debut for new yard at Taunton during the spring, but below par all 3 subsequent starts and others make more appeal.

Offered little over hurdles and similar story on chase debut in April. However, this point winner left that form well behind following a wind op when runner-up on return at Warwick (2½m) last month.

Winning pointer who improved at second attempt in this sphere when outpointing Achy Breaky Heart (winner since) under this rider at Newton Abbot (25.8f). 5 lb rise fair and further progress likely.

Opened Rules account in a 21f Newton Abbot handicap chase in July, but his record is rather patchy and he was beaten a fair way when fourth to O'Faolains Lad there last time. Blinkers applied.

Dual point winner who posted his best effort under Rules when second of 4 in hunter chase at Exeter (24.2f) in April. No show at Cheltenham later that month, though, and he's hard to warm to here.

Successful twice between the flags, but hasn't threatened under Rules so far and it's easy enough to look elsewhere.

Moody type who isn't the easiest to catch right. Still, he's just 2 lb higher than for his Warwick success in May and a reproduction of last month's Worcester effort would put him in the picture.

Hasn't shown much under Rules to this point and it's hard to envisage him playing a leading role.

Some decent placed efforts to his name, but it's hard to escape the fact that this 10-y-o remains a maiden following 25 attempts overall (0-17 in this sphere).

Unreliable type who showed a bit more on his third start for this yard when third at Stratford (27.5f) last time, but he's far from certain to be in the same form here.

Forecasts

Jony Max (2/1), O'Faolains Lad (7/2), Legend Of Zorro (4/1), Write It Down (5/1), Dido (12/1), Wavecrest (20/1), Catch The Cuban (25/1), Lure Des Pres (33/1), Monty Massini (33/1), Hardtorock (50/1), Milberry (66/1)

Verdict

The two that stand out are JONY MAX and O'Faolains Lad, both of whom remain open to improvement in this sphere. The latter is not passed over lightly on the back of his Newton Abbot victory, but Jony Max took a big step forward when going close at Warwick and, with this stiffer test expected to be right up his street, he gets the nod. Write It Down is best of the rest.

  1. JONY MAX (IRE)
  2. O'FAOLAINS LAD (IRE)
  3. WRITE IT DOWN (IRE)
