Lightly raced sort makes seasonal/handicap debut on first attempt at 1m2f. Betting likely to prove informative as to what to expect first time out, but he held smart form as a two-year-old last year. Sole career victory came over 1m at this course.

Looked pretty smart when recording second career victory at Doncaster (1m; good to firm). Found 'Listed' company too much last time, but major player on handicap debut for powerhouse jockey/trainer combo. Should improve for step up in distance.

Fluffed his lines when sent off 9/2jf for warm Royal Ascot handicap. Back to form when beaten just under a length in a 'Listed' event at Longchamp (1m2f; good to soft) when returned to this trip. Worth another chance back on these shores.

Set a couple of stiff tasks (2000 Guineas/Brittania Stakes) since making winning debut through the Winter. Makes handicap bow and the extra 2f should see some improvement as he is a half-brother to a 1m2f/1m4f winner. Not written off.

Not looked back since no show on seasonal reappearance, recording two handicap victories since then at Newmarket (1m2f; good/soft). Up 8lb in a better race now, but has a good attitude and likely to remain competitive.

Finished last of 11 on his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket (1m2f; soft) in the race Zabeel Champion won. May appreciate the better ground, and stables runners always respected at this meeting. Stable second-string though and too much to prove.

Turf/handicap debut as he goes to 1m2f for the first time. Made light work of short odds (2/7f) at Wolverhampton (1m; standard) latest, and previous victory when getting the better of Tilsit looks strong form too. Strong claims.

Things have not gone to plan on either start this season with him looking a difficult ride on each occasion. Unshipped jockey at Haydock (1m2f; soft) at the start of the month. Stable in magnificent form, so has place claims if behaving himself.

Front-pair drew seven-length clear of the third when he was second on his first run of the season at Thirsk (1m; good). Winner had the benefit of race fitness on his side. This handicap newcomer is intriguing on first attempt at 1m2f.

Not disgraced as an outsider in behind some likeable types on both starts this season, finishing fourth on each occasion. Should be winning races before the season is out, but plenty more needed in this grade to trouble the leading contenders.

Hard to enthuse over given he only finished sixth on his return from a short break when upped marginally in class at Kempton (1m; standard to slow). Now tries 1m2f for the first time as he switches to turf but is out of the weights.

Verdict

This is a notable drop in grade for Starcat who has been set two pretty stiff tasks since making a winning debut on the AW in December and he is one to consider with the step up in trip likely to suit. It is also too early to write off Bright Melody who looked a smart prospect prior to his Royal Ascot disappointment and he has shown more in France since then. Magnetised should strip fitter for his recent seasonal debut but this looks to be between handicap newcomers MAGICAL MORNING and Al Salt. Narrow preference is for the former who we know handles turf & should appreciate the drop in class after previously looking very smart in winning two novice events.
  1. Magical Morning
  2. Al Salt
  3. Starcat
