Out of his depth (66-1) in the Class 2 Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot last month (Maori Knight disappointing); unbeaten in two previous visits to Newcastle (7f-1m), but much higher in the weights nowadays and arguably remains unproven at 1m2f.

Chelmsford maiden winner (1m); was caught close home on handicap debut at Haydock (1m2f, good to soft) last month - form franked since; raced keenly (detrimental to his chances) on soft ground at Royal Ascot; non-runner yesterday at Newmarket.

Muhaarar colt (115,000gns juvenile); emphatically took the scalp of Lordofthehorizon in a four-runner novice at Lingfield (1m2f) in January; found the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood (won by Derby second Khalifa Sat) too competitive latest.

Newly hooded Golden Horn filly; was short-headed by the Charles Hills-trained Vividly in a 7f Goodwood maiden (good) last August; this greater test of stamina (half-sister to the 1m6f-2m2f winner Land of Oz) should suit; handicap debut.

10/1
Made all, when an emphatic 6L winner of a 7f fillies' novice at Chepstow (good) last September; struggled to make her mark in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes on her next start and low-key on recent seasonal reappearance (Haydock); stamina doubtful.

11/2
Cost 175,000gns as a juvenile; no match for the progressive Streak Lightning (winner since) on seasonal reappearance at Wolverhampton (1m½f); every likelihood that there's better to come now introduced to handicapping over a more suitable trip.

Maqtalp121
Age: 3|  Weight: 8-8| J: E J Walsh| T: R Varian| OR:  76
12/1
Yarmouth maiden winner (7f); half-brother to the Newcastle scorer Turjomaan (7f); finished last of five to Zabeel Champion at Newmarket (1m2f, Class 4) last month; faces competition up front from Maori Knight & Festival Day; cheekpieces applied.

Forecasts

Gallaside (10/3), Fiji (7/2), Maori Knight (7/2), Master The Stars (11/2), Craylands (8/1), Festival Day (10/1), Maqtal (12/1)

Verdict

Richard Hughes doesn't saddle too many runners at this track (0-5 AW), but elects to re-route Maori Knight north from Newmarket (non-runner yesterday; going), and he promises to help set a good even gallop from the outset, with Festival Day and Maqtal thought likely to be vying for the early dominance. Market support could be worth noting for the handicap debutantes Master The Stars and Craylands both of whom promise to show improvement (on pedigree) for tonight's longer trip. However, we'll chance David Simcock's FIJI. His stamina reserves merely ebbed away late on in a very strong Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood (1m3f).
  1. Fiji
  2. Master The Stars
  3. Maori Knight
