Continues to somehow defy the attentions of the handicapper (owing largely to grit and determination); made every single yard when gamely repelling Star Of The East at Newmarket (1m6f) 13 days ago; 3lb higher; effective on Wolverhampton's Tapeta.
Kempton winner; was never involved (seventh) on reappearance at Newbury (1m4f, good) four weeks ago, admittedly in a competitive Class 2 handicap; sits just 2lb higher than when beating Charles Kingsley by ¾L at Doncaster (1m6½f) last September.
Rock-solid C&D performer - winner of the 2018 Northumberland Vase, and positively involved in the two most recent renewals of the Northumberland Plate; has 'earned' a 3lb rise for finishing a close fourth to Caravan Of Hope a fortnight ago.
Has rattled through the grades on the AW at Newcastle, and although most effective over 1m4½f, was a creditable second to Mondain in a sub-standard Northumberland Vase a fortnight ago; the subsequent 3lb rise poses a sterner question.
Soon on the back foot at the business end of affairs (finished tenth) in the Northumberland Plate a fortnight ago; has bossed his rivals in similar small-field races in the past (including over C&D) but does compete from a joint-career high mark.
Often troublesome in the preliminaries, but has a clear affinity with Gosforth Park (twice a course winner); ever so steadily on the comeback trail from an injury setback; should find a more suitable opportunity here (1m4½f) sooner or later.
Forecasts
Sleeping Lion (5/2), Anyonecanhaveitall (5/2), Cosmelli (11/4), Charlie D (11/2), Glan Y Gors (12/1), Ajman Prince (28/1)
A moderate turnout numerically, but the pace should be plentiful courtesy of Charlie D and Anyonecanhaveitall. Tom Dascombe's admirable five-year-old makes his first visit to Newcastle (Wolverhampton proven) off the back of a most determined display at Newmarket, while the benefit of hindsight dictates that Mark Johnston's charge was facing a stern task setting the early fractions in the Northumberland Plate. However, for small stakes, the advice is to stick with the solid C&D performer COSMELLI. Gay Kelleway had reported him to be in much better shape this year ahead of last month's Northumberland Plate (finished a close fourth to Caravan Of Hope and Australis).
- Cosmelli
- Sleeping Lion
- Charlie D
