Made a winning debut when scoring by a neck at Redcar (6f; good) in tidy fashion. Will need to settle better in the prelims and the form isn't outstanding. However, step up to this trip should be ideal on that evidence so he is a player nonetheless.

Thrice raced sort. Made it third time lucky when well-backed over C&D last week under a front-running ride on turf debut. Could be very dangerous if allowed to lead again and is probably the one to beat.

Sole newcomer in the field. Cost £21,000 as a yearling. By Havana Gold. Dam a winner over 1m-1m3f. Market likely to prove informative but difficult to see him winning this on debut given the level of form he has to aim at.

Didn't show a great deal of improvement from low-key debut effort when only third of four over C&D last time out. Looks more of a handicap sort and he gains a mark for that sphere after this run so opposed for the time being.

Shown little promise in a pair of maidens over 5f. Now steps up in trip to 7f. However, this is a competitive event and she is comfortably the outsider of the field on what she has shown so far so is readily opposed.

Verdict

This opening race provides Mark Johnston's NIGHT MOMENT with an excellent opportunity to follow up his recent C&D success. In this small-field affair he could be tough to peg back if front-running tactics are adopted once more. The obvious danger to the selection is Grantley who got off the mark at the first time of asking, and looked in need of the step up to 7f when thundering home late on. He should be heavily involved but the form of that race wasn't particularly well advertised by the runner-up who ran poorly at Leicester during the week. The newcomer Cubano can finish best of the rest given the lowly standard set by the remainder of the field.

  2. Grantley
  3. Cubano
