4-15 over fences including 2m Aintree Grade 1 novice in April 2019; some promising efforts in defeat last season (small fields) and fit from recent hurdles spin. Can't be discounted despite top weight.

Avenir D'Une Viep,t157
Age: 10|  Weight: 11-7| J: D N Russell| T: G Elliott| OR:  145| D
16/1
Winner of a Fairyhouse handicap chase (2m½f, soft) in November on first start after joining this trainer (rated 134); capable of competing in this company but might want softer ground. Jockey booking a positive.

Jan Maat116
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-13| J: Rachael Blackmore| T: H De Bromhead| OR:  137| D
9/4
Dual chase winner last season and not disgraced in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham when last spotted; looks to be on a competitive mark here and should be firmly in the mix for Rachel Blackmore.

Or Jaune De Somozap157
Age: 8|  Weight: 10-12| J: H Morgan(7)| T: H De Bromhead| OR:  136| D

Seen to best effect on quick ground as evidenced in both of last year's chase wins; more to find than a few of these on paper and looks to be second string from Henry De Bromhead's yard on jockey bookings.

Contingency297
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-9| J: Paul Townend| T: W P Mullins| OR:  133
11/2
Good winner of 2m4f novice chase at Listowel (good) in September last year, making it 2-2 over fences. Represents top trainer/jockey in the land and she may have more to offer, for all that this is competitive stuff on handicap bow.

Horse silk
Black Scorpiont268
Age: 9|  Weight: 10-6| J: C P McNamara(5)| T: E McNamara| OR:  130
12/1
Has made the frame in both starts at this track (2m1f) and also third in 2018 Munster National over 3m; largely out of sorts in five runs since then however and back from a break with something to prove down in trip.

Callthebarmant194
Age: 6|  Weight: 10-4| J: J M Moore| T: G P Cromwell| OR:  128
14/1
Won Perth's Silver Cup last summer (2m, good to soft; 5-1) and is 2-5 over fences; faded after mistakes at Leopardstown over Christmas and off since. Not ruled out in any haste.

Everlastingpromise184
Age: 6|  Weight: 10-1| J: Darragh O'Keeffe| T: E Bolger| OR:  125| BF
3/1
Typically likes to front run and has two wins in nine over fences; bit more needed to defy this rating but certainly can harbour place claims if able to get into rhythm on the front end.

My Manekineko112
Age: 11|  Weight: 9-12| J: Gavin Brouder(7)| T: J Nash| OR:  116
40/1
Finally on the board over fences at the 21st time of asking when scoring at Leopardstown (2m5½f, yielding; 12-1) in March; plenty on his plate here however from 6lb out of the handicap and others are preferred.

Runner-up in 2m1f handicap over fences here last summer, but doesn't win often (2-25) and not favoured on these terms returning from a break. Up against it on the formbook.

Forecasts

Jan Maat (9/4), Everlastingpromise (3/1), Contingency (11/2), Ornua (8/1), Duca De Thaix (12/1), Black Scorpion (12/1), Callthebarman (14/1), Or Jaune De Somoza (14/1), Avenir D'Une Vie (16/1), Smithscorner (22/1), My Manekineko (40/1)

Verdict

Top-weight Ornua was a Grade 1-winning novice in 2019 and could get back on track while Jan Maat has shaped well over fences and looks likely to be in the thick of this for Henry De Bromhead. Avenir D'Une Vie might prefer to see some rain; while it would be dangerous to dismiss the claims of likely frontrunner Everlastingpromise. Some doubts now exist over Callthebarman's jumping but CONTINGENCY has been very good in two wins over fences and Willie Mullins' mare makes her h'cap debut now from what might prove a workable opening mark in her bid to make it 3-3 over these obstacles.
  1. Contingency
  2. Jan Maat
  3. Everlastingpromise
