Wells De Lunet182
Age: 9|  Weight: 11-12| J: S Bowen| T: P & M Bowen| OR:  138| D
18/1
Absent since making all to win a Class 5 selling handicap hurdle at Fakenham (2m4f, good to soft) on New Year's Day; 2lb higher in a stronger race; won't be hindered by dropping back in trip - has plenty of winning form over 2m1f.

Dino Velvet22
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-7| J: Adrian Heskin| T: A King| OR:  133| D
4/1
No match for the winner (Verdana Blue) when runner-up in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr (2m, good) in April 2019; finished down the field behind the Northumberland Plate winner Caravan of Hope at Wolverhampton (1m6f) latest; obvious chance.

Age: 11|  Weight: 11-3| J: C O'Farrell| T: Mrs Dianne Sayer| OR:  129

Similarly to the top-weight Wells De Lune, this veteran is a force to be reckoned with when allowed to bowl along in front at Cartmel (boasts five wins over 2m1f at the Lakes venue); racing will soon be resuming at that scenic track.

Extreme Force152
Age: 4|  Weight: 10-13| J: R P McLernon| T: J & A O'Neill| OR:  127| D
22/1
Much improved performer since switched to hurdles; won twice (in juvenile contests) at Catterick around the turn of the calendar year; an opening handicap mark of 127 appears to be reasonably fair; any further rain would be considered helpful.

Empreinte Reconcet235
Age: 6|  Weight: 10-13| J: Jonjo O'Neill Jr.| T: C L Tizzard| OR:  125
10/1
Showed a smart turn of foot (smooth traveller) when justifying favouritism at Newton Abbot (2m1f) last August; 'doubled-up' there six days later (awarded the race-winner weighed in light); higher in the handicap, but with valid trip excuses latest.
6
Horse silk
Gateway To Europe227
Age: 6|  Weight: 10-12| J: Bryony Frost| T: N B King| OR:  124
15/2
Prominent-racer; demonstrated a willing attitude when twice scoring on a sound surface (Fontwell & Plumpton) last autumn; seemingly found exposed by the combination of a rise in the weights/step up in class since; will win again in his turn.

See The Sea25
Age: 6|  Weight: 10-11| J: B S Hughes| T: D McCain Jnr| OR:  123
16/1
Keen-racer; beat her somewhat quirky stablemate The Herds Garden when completing a hat-trick at Bangor (2m½f, good) last August; out of her depth (66-1) on the AW at Newcastle 25-days ago, but that run should serve to aid her race-fitness.

Horse silk
Carntopt15
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-10| J: G Sheehan| T: Jamie Snowden| OR:  122| CD
7/2
Was winning for the third time over hurdles when ridden out to beat The Vollan by 2L over C&D (good) in July 2019; just 2lb higher under similar conditions here, and with the benefit of a recent spin at Royal Ascot (Ascot Stakes).
9

Scorched Earth16
Age: 4|  Weight: 10-9| J: Harry Skelton| T: D Skelton| OR:  123| D
6/1
Ex-Ger Lyons; made a winning start for Dan Skelton at Catterick (1m7½f, good to soft) last November; reasonably solid (improving) in better races since; runner-up to Le Musee on the Flat at Chepstow (2m, good) 16 days ago; holds every chance.

Authorizot161
Age: 5|  Weight: 10-8| J: Henry Brooke| T: O Greenall & J Guerriero| OR:  120| DWS
100/1
Made a promising start for Gordon Elliott (2m Fairyhouse maiden winner) before gradually regressing race-by-race; pulled up on both starts for this trainer; can recent wind surgery work the oracle?

St Gallent29
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-8| J: R Johnson| T: O Murphy| OR:  120| BF| D

Below-par in a Listed contest at Market Rasen last July (won both of his first two starts for Olly Murphy - Market Rasen & Kelso); just held on return to action at Kempton (1m2f) last month; fair mark on second start since wind surgery.

Forecasts

St Gallen (3/1), Carntop (7/2), Dino Velvet (4/1), Scorched Earth (6/1), Gateway To Europe (15/2), Empreinte Reconce (10/1), Vision Clear (10/1), See The Sea (16/1), Wells De Lune (18/1), Extreme Force (22/1), Beeno (50/1), Authorizo (100/1)

Verdict

Plenty of those declared should prove capable of winning further races, with the likes of Scorched Earth (Dan Skelton) and Vision Clear (Gary Moore) at the forefront of mind. However, this race will be fiercely contested from the outset, with proven front-runners known to include the Cartmel specialists Wells De Lune and Beeno, in addition to Gateway To Europe and See The Sea. Both Dino Velvet (Scottish Champion Hurdle second) and Extreme Force are undoubtedly worthy of their place towards the top of the market, but after a pleasing comeback from wind surgery on the AW at Kempton, the lowly-weighted ST GALLEN could be the answer.
  1. St Gallen
  2. Dino Velvet
  3. Scorched Earth
