Kept very busy, winning back-to-back races at Chelmsford & Kempton (both 7f), for which he carries an 8lb penalty; raced with all of his usual zest when runner-up to House Deposit at Haydock (7f, good) on Wednesday; form pick if turned out swiftly.

Age: 4|  Weight: 9-6| J: D Tudhope| T: L Bailey| OR:  54

13-race maiden; demonstrated his best form as a juvenile (for Richard Hannon); has eased another 2lb in the weights since finishing just under 5L third to Deotali at Newcastle (7f) In February; second start for Liam Bailey.

Half-brother to the 5f-6f winner Thornaby Princess; hasn't shown a great deal of natural ability in novice contests (7f), although can probably be forgiven a dismal effort on the Fibresand at Southwell; makes his handicap debut at the age of 5.

Capitalised on a consistent spell of form when justifying favouritism on the AW at Newcastle (1m) last October; seldom seen in competitive action since, yet remains on a fair handicap mark (54); modest turf record (1-27) the obvious concern.

Hasn't managed to beat too many rivals since finishing a neck second to Amor Fati at Wolverhampton (1m1½f) in April 2019; blinkers are applied, presumably in a last-ditch bid to make her break on terms.

Was driven right out when scoring by a neck in a Class 5 maiden handicap at Redcar (1m, good); ran respectably on her next couple of starts, until a much tamer effort back at the Tees venue (1m2f) 331-days ago; sharper for this race?

Spark Of Warv113
Age: 5|  Weight: 9-2| J: G Lee| T: P T Midgley| OR:  50
8/1
Ex-Keith Dalgleish; brought his career record to 0-19 when finishing a weakening sixth (of eight) to Harry George at Newcastle (1m, Class 6) in March; arguably isn't completely exposed (at this 1m trip) on second start for Paul Midgley.

Broctune Red8
Age: 5|  Weight: 8-13| J: Phil Dennis| T: G Boanas| OR:  47
6/1
Nine-race maiden; returned from an 11-month absence with a solid effort (always prominent) on the Westwood at Beverley (1m2f, good) last week; reverts back to 1m, before the token weights rise (1lb) kicks into place; possibilities.

Carlow Boyp1118
Age: 4|  Weight: 8-12| J: A Elliott| T: C N Kellett| OR:  45
50/1
Nine-race maiden who has yet to threaten to trouble the judge; dwelt and always in rear at Southwell (1m) in February; the cheekpieces are introduced seeking a total transformation.

Jagerbondv1150
Age: 4|  Weight: 8-12| J: Jason Hart| T: A Crook| OR:  45
66/1
Lowly-rated 24-race maiden; was beaten 10L (by Clipsham Tiger) when runner-up at Southwell (1m) last November; increasingly poor since; impossible to make a case for despite the addition of a visor; look elsewhere with confidence.

Verdict

LACAN emerged with credit, despite being a beaten favourite at Haydock Park (7f) on Wednesday, and if turned out swiftly seeking a third win since June 16th ought to take plenty of beating in a moderate contest. If he does possess a slight achilles heel, it's probably that he's raced a shade too keenly recently and that means he can't be considered a strong betting proposition (despite remaining the likeliest winner) over this 1m trip. Should he not take his chance, the fairly handicapped Newcastle scorer Rebel State may offer a suitable alternative in a race where the runners are all basically much of a muchness.
  1. Lacan
  2. Rebel State
  3. Watheer
