Has been a little disappointing so far this year, and while he was beaten only narrowly when fourth at Chelmsford on penultimate start, he failed to match that over 6f here last time. Trying a new trip now.

Talented but frustrating character. Not beaten far on his last two starts, and is thrown in on his best form, but isn't one for maximum faith at the best of times.

Seven of his eight wins have come on Polytrack, but 0-7 at this track, and has raced only once in the past 14 months. Record fresh is modest, and likely to find others too sharp once more.

Landed a gamble off 3lb lower mark here last March, and went on to complete a hat-trick. Form has dipped since, but dangerously well handicapped as a result, and type to bounce back having been freshened up.

Won twice at Wolverhampton last season, but has made only minor impact in a few runs this term. Now 5lb below his last winning mark, and senior rider takes over from an inexperienced apprentice, which offers some hope.

Easing in the weights since winning a 7½f claimer at Deauville (for Paul Cole) in August 2019. Best effort for new yard when sixth of 10 at Wolverhampton last time, but more required to make an impact here.

Suited by a right-handed track, winning a pair of turf handicaps last year, and just 1lb above last winning mark. Weakened as if needing run when last of 5 at Southwell in March, and better judged on previous form.

Very well bred (out of G1 Sprint Cup winner African Rose), and showed plenty of ability in three runs for Roger Charlton in 2019. Badly drawn on debut for new yard, though, and probably best watched.

Won first-time-up over C&D last season, and dropped to an identical mark before finishing a good second here on his return in March. Must show he can build on that, but clearly goes well fresh.

Consistent, and placed off his current mark on four of his last five starts, most recently when 3L second to River Dawn at Lingfield in February (in first-time blinkers). Well drawn and fully effective over C&D, so must be shortlisted.

A fine servant to these connections over the years, and has won seven times in total. Not the force of old, however, and bit to prove after ending last season out of sorts.

Forecasts

Gossiping (13/8), Oloroso (7/2), Plunger (4/1), Merweb (10/1), Sea Fox (16/1), Venture (20/1), Carnival Rose (25/1), Suzi's Connoisseur (33/1), How Bizarre (40/1), Sir Roderic (80/1), Shyron (100/1), Imhotep (100/1)

Verdict

OLOROSO comes from a yard in form, and arrives on the back of a career-best effort over track and trip. He has a decent record when fresh, so a break since that comeback run is a positive, and he gets the nod over the consistent Merweb, who cannot be faulted on recent efforts and remains on a handy mark. Gossiping is inconsistent, but landed a gamble here last season, and if early support for him is sustained, it would look very significant.
  1. Oloroso
  2. Merweb
  3. Gossiping
