Returns to hurdling having failed to convince over fences in five attempts; showed better than claiming form when last seen over the smaller objects in April 2019; classiest entrant who should go well.

Won a small field maiden hurdle over course and distance at this meeting last year on good to soft; returned after long break to run reasonably well at Leicester in January; entitled to be fitter here and leading chance.
Struggled a little after showing ability on bumper debut last March including in only appearance over hurdles in October; difficult to assess after absence but more evidence of hurdling ability needed.

Dual Flat winner in 2018; has not shown enough ability over hurdles to suggest he is capable of winning a race even at this lowly level; evidence would suggest another double digit defeat is in the offing.

No wins or places in 13 starts on the Flat suggest he may struggle on hurdles debut especially when considering his pedigree; surely just making up the numbers.

Verdict

Course and distance winner SWAFFHAM BULBECK warmed up for a return to his favourite track with a pipe-opener at Leicester at the end of January. He was doing his best work in the closing stages that day and should be ready to get back to winning ways here. The main danger could be Coole Well who returns to hurdles having not really enjoyed his time over fences. If able to recapture his old hurdles form then he could be a big danger to the selection. Highwayman looks the only other one in the line-up who could run into a place if either of the front two fail to fire.
  1. Swaffham Bulbeck
  2. Coole Well
  3. Highwayman
