Newcastle bumper winner for the late Malcolm Jefferson (Dec 2016); returned from a mammoth absence (833 days) with a comfortable maiden hurdle win at Ayr (2m4½f, heavy) in January; penalised accordingly, but will relish these conditions.

Half-brother to a couple of winners, but was soon beaten (66-1) on hurdles debut at Carlisle (2m1f, soft) four weeks ago; out of his depth against some of these opponents?

100/1
Lowly-rated 43-race maiden; has unsuccessfully mixed point-to-point racing with rules racing so far this calendar year; holds no chance whatsoever barring accidents; look elsewhere.
Milan gelding (€40,000 3yo); prominent racer; was held in third when falling on hurdles debut at Perth (2m, heavy) in September; weakened into the midfield at Kelso (2m, heavy) subsequently; place claims in a weak event.

66/1
Front-runner with an ever growing collection of letters among her form figures; 0-28 over hurdles and requires nothing short of a miracle in order to prove competitive at these weights.
Former pointer (form figures read 7FFF); wasn't exactly foot perfect on her hurdles debut at Carlisle (2m3½f, soft) either, yet did manage to stay on from off the pace to finish third (at odds of 250-1) to Lily's Gem.

Forecasts

Mayo Star (1/5), Bonny Houxty (4/1), Dionysis (8/1), Slainte Mhor (10/1), Marvellous Joe (14/1), Beyondtheflame (66/1), Rapid Fritz (100/1)

Verdict

Dionysis, Slainte Mhor and Bonny Houxty should fight out the minor honours in a relatively weak opener which should see the Nicky Richards-trained MAYO STAR register a second straight hurdles success. A talented bumper performer for the late Malcolm Jefferson, he re-emerged from a mammoth absence with a most taking performance north of the border at Ayr. The forecast testing conditions (heavy, soft in places) will suit this 125-rated hurdler to perfection.
  1. Mayo Star
  2. Slainte Mhor
  3. Dionysis
