Consistent sort on the Flat for Mark Johnston and took to hurdles like a duck to water on debut for new yard at Newbury, coming clear in the closing stages for an easy win. More to come, you feel, and he looks one of the big players today.

Useful on the Flat (for Mark Johnston) and made an immediate impression on hurdles debut, winning at Market Rasen; bettered that when second in a Grade 2 at Doncaster last time and this test will suit; leading chance.

Yet to score in 15 starts under all codes and on his third trainer already; pulled up on hurdles debut at Catterick after looking a bit novicey early on, may have learnt a bit from that but a lot to find here. Easy enough to look elsewhere.
A winner on the Flat in France and although he showed a bit more on his second hurdles start here behind Rowland Ward last month, lacked a gear and looked in need of further; could progress again but will need to.

Already has plenty of hurdling experience to his name and is improving a little with each start, so has that going for him; however overall level of form still likely to fall short of what's required here, so needs another step forward today.

Sprinter on the Flat and has shown little in two starts for new yard, unsurprisingly too keen for his own good; one for spring handicaps when the ground quickens up a bit, and can only be watched here.

Winner over 10f on the Flat (off a mark of just 55) in the summer, but struggled to run to that level again; however, much better when an 11l second to Fraser Island on hurdles debut last month, a run that gives him e/w chances if improving on it.
His second to Sir Dragonet on the Flat at Tipperary back in April looks a cracking bit of form, but he never went on from that and an early unseat on debut for yard at Sandown last weekend won't help either. Ability is there if he cares to use it.
Came good over a mile on the Flat at Yarmouth in the summer, but not so good after that; has joined a shrewd trainer who will no doubt get a win out of her somewhere down the line, but looks a bit out of her depth here.

Forecasts

Fraser Island (11/10), Lord Lamington (6/4), Goa Lil (12/1), Zarafshan (12/1), Highway To Success (12/1), Sir Canford (16/1), Fume (66/1), Pushmi Pullyu (80/1), Lonimoss Bareliere (100/1)

Verdict

This looks between the two penalised runners, Fraser Island and LORD LAMINGTON, and there's not a lot to choose between the two. Preference is just for Lord Lamington, who might enjoy the underfoot conditions a little more than his main rival, and has taken well to hurdles. Fraser Island will be no pushover after his debut success and if allowed to use his turn of foot, will be dangerous. Zarafshan has the potential to throw a spanner in the works but an early fall at Sandown last weekend is a bit offputting.
  1. Lord Lamington
  2. Fraser Island
  3. Zarafshan
