A very capable novice hurdler (2m Hexham winner (soft) last October); appeared to be back near to his best when making a smooth winning chasing debut at Chepstow (2m, soft) last week; carries a 7lb penalty (is due a 10lb rise).

Returned to action from a lengthy absence with a very taking chasing debut win at Carlisle (2m, good to soft) - runner-up Esprit Du Large won nicely at Exeter on Wednesday; of definite interest from a 6lb higher mark.

Made all when winning a Class 4 novices' hurdle at Plumpton (2m, soft) last December, and broadly reliable thereafter; it's debatable whether or not he truly merits an official rating of 125; cheekpieces are added for chasing debut.

Forecasts

Simply The Betts (8/13), The King Of May (9/4), Empire De Maulde (10/3), Coole Well (7/1)

Verdict

An additional race offered by the BHA in order to provide a suitable opportunity for novice handicap chasers in this rating bracket (Class 3) yet frustratingly only four runners stand their ground. Both Coole Well and Empire De Maulde will need to be at the top of their respective games on chasing debut in order to trouble the recent winners Simply The Betts and THE KING OF MAY. Harry Whittington's runner is 3lb well in under a 7lb penalty for last week's Chepstow win, but a narrow preference is for the Brian Ellison-trained Carlisle scorer The King Of May who saw that form line handsomely franked by Esprit Du Large (Evan Williams) at Exeter on Wednesday.
