Career best wins on his only two starts 12 months apart Uttoxeter (May 2018) and Aintree (June 2019). Back from a break, another career best in now required but hard to knock those winning efforts, and not entirely ruled out.

Won two of his four novice chases last season (Exeter/Fontwell), latterly over 3m2f. Was beaten in between those wins off 3lb lower at Uttoxeter but lightly raced and unexposed over fences, the emphasis on stamina could be his biggest asset.

Won off 2lb lower at Newton Abbot (3m2f, good) in May which was a career best but has been moderate in his last three starts. Those latter two efforts were over hurdles and he my appreciate the return to fences but hard to know what to expect.

Won two small-field chases last season before being highly-tried, and performing creditably, in better races after. Second off this mark when last seen at Warwick (3m, good) in March. Had wind surgery since and cheekpieces return (has won in them).

Got off the mark over fences at the third attempt at Exeter (2m1½f, good to soft) in January but well beaten upped to 3m in two subsequent runs. Those defeats give concern for his stamina over this trip but another who has had a wind operation.

In good form this time last year when third in this race and 2nd in the Badger Ales Trophy. Form dipped since then, except when winning at Southwell (3m, good) in May. Beaten on all four runs rated 134+ and is probably best watched after absence.

Form peaked with 14L win at Bangor (3m, soft) last December. Ran well at Kempton later that month but form tailed off in two subsequent runs and despite dropping 2lb, is still 10lb higher than his win at the Welsh venue. Needs a career best.

Beau Du Brizais18
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-7| J: M G Nolan| T: P Hobbs & J White| OR:  135
16/1
All wins on flat, right-handed tracks. Won well at Kempton (3m, good) in May and returned with a good second at Ludlow (3m, good) recently. Likely to give his running again but may now be in the handicappers grip with career high mark.

Won two chases in midsummer at Ffos Las (both 3m) but ran poorly at Newton Abbot next time. Ran fairly in three hurdle starts since but never looked liked winning and, with a 9lb higher mark back over fences, might find younger rivals too good.

Performed well without winning on his first five chase starts (2m6½f-3m2f) but seemingly relished the step up to 3m6½f at Exeter (good to soft), when winning in April. Up 5lb and absent since, may well need further to be seen at his best.

Verdict

A cracking staying chase for the feature race with several second season chasers open to any amount of improvement. After his 13L win at Exeter in March, CONINGSBY looked liked he could make up into a decent staying chaser and is the selection to pick up where he left off last season. The Nicholls-trained pairing of Captain Cattistock and Coup De Pinceau are respected, with preference for the latter after being highly tried last year whilst at the foot of the handicap, One Of Us came into his own over a marathon trip at Exeter in the Spring and will still be galloping at the business end.
