Progressed from a solid effort on debut at Doncaster in July to win in a gritty manner and justify favouritism at Yarmouth last month. The penalty makes life tougher but he's going the right way and the step up to a mile should be fine. Shortlisted.

A son of Kingman who is yet to really capture the imagination; his debut run was a quiet affair, while he was also down the field when tried over a mile on the Polytrack at Chelmsford in August. Looks the type to do better in handicaps next year.

A son of Shamardal out of an Authorized mare, he's a half-brother to a Dramatic Device, who was a 1m2f-1m4f winner; his dam is a half-sister to the Group 2 Ribblesdale winner Flying Cloud. Appeals on pedigree and should progress as a three-year-old.

Stablemate of In The Night so the betting can guide as to any preserved preference. The Dubawi colt is the first foal of an 8.5f stakes winner in the USA and is related to several useful performers on the American dirt tracks. Interesting debutante.

A son of the mighty Frankel out of an Oasis Dream mare; his dam was unraced but is a half-sister to an Italian Group 1 winner as well as a Listed race winner over a mile. Worth a betting check but likely to be sharper for this introductory run.
Third behind a couple of progressive individuals in a 1m novice stakes at Ffos Las in September, which was a step up from her debut run when seventh of eight (behind subsequent May Hill Winner Powerful Breeze) at Newmarket in August. Good chance.

Forecasts

In The Night (5/6), Maqtal (11/4), Maria Rosa (10/3), Poet's Mind (9/2), Fashion Royalty (12/1), Deverell (16/1), Spirit Dancer (28/1)

Verdict

The presence of $1,5750,000 purchase Maria Rosa ensures a deeper interest to an otherwise ordinary looking novice stakes and any market move would be dangerous to ignore. However, MAQTAL, as the only previous winner, arguably edges out Fashion Beauty as the one to be on despite the fact he has to concede a penalty and the fillies allowance on this occasion. Stablemates Poet's Mind and In The Night add further spice for paddock watchers to scribble notes about.
  1. Maqtal
  2. Fashion Royalty
  3. Maria Rosa
