Sole win in 20 career starts came at Wetherby (3m, heavy) in February 2018; below par when last in competitive action in the Lincolnshire National (3m 3½f, soft) on Boxing Day 2018; a tough ask on seasonal reappearance.

Won this race with ridiculous ease last year (is now rated 15lb higher); caught close home (beaten a short-head) by Weststreet in the four-miler here (heavy) during the Cheltenham Festival before another second in the Highland National (Perth).

No win since March 2016 (Ffos Las); probably needed the run on his seasonal reappearance at Perth (2m4f handicap hurdle) although worryingly has failed to complete on two of his four starts over fences.

All three wins have come at Hexham, including twice over fences; 2lb higher than when making all to beat Dun Faw Good by 7L over C&D (good to soft) in June; some work to do with Pena Dorada on more recent form.

Advancing in terms of years but has been running reasonably well all summer (stable in-form); a 7L winner at Cartmel in May (3m1f+, soft) he had Classical Milano behind (fourth) when chasing home King Golan over C&D (good) last month.

Won three-times in France, including over hurdles (Pau) and fences (Pau/Auteuil); took a heavy fall when bang-in-contention here on his penultimate start (never travelling next time); well handicapped if fully recovered mentally; worth the risk?

Maiden over fences (0-15) and just 1-34 overall; plugged on to finish a distant third to Grand Coureur at Bangor (2m4f, soft) ten days ago; is readily opposed despite having Brian Hughes aboard (an obvious plus).

Forecasts

Misfits (3/1), Classical Milano (9/2), Pena Dorada (5/1), Kerisper (5/1), Just Georgie (11/2), Square Viviani (6/1), Misdflight (12/1)

Verdict

MISFITS hacked up in this contest last year and raised his game further still over stamina sapping trips thereafter, finishing a short-head second in the four-miler here during the Cheltenham Festival before again finding his nemesis Weststreet stronger in the 3m6f Highland National at Perth. With a recent run under his belt, he is the tentative selection in a broadly unappealing handicap. The veteran Pena Dorada is another in with a shout for the in-form Alistair Whillans, while a case of sorts can also be made for the well-handicapped Square Viviani although admittedly he is a much riskier proposition (could be worth chancing depending upon the price).
  1. Misfits
  2. Square Viviani
  3. Pena Dorada
