Turned over when sent off 1/5f at Carlisle (5f; good to firm) on vastly superior ground conditions to when he finished runner-up at York (5f; soft) on debut. Yard are among the winners now, and he should get back on track on slightly easier ground.

Took a step forward from debut effort when runner-up at Thirsk (6f; good to firm), when seemingly outstayed by the winner. Drop in trip to 5f should suit and he is arguably the one to beat if taking another step forward.

Anjaal colt. Cost just E4,000 as a yearling. Yard not known for having great levels of success with newcomers/two-year-olds. Major surprise if he was good enough to play a leading role on debut.

Belied odds of 33-1 when making debut over C&D. Finished third and that was promising. If she can build upon that there is every possibility she could go two places better.

Not managed to beat a single rival on both starts to date. Sent off at 100-1 when making turf debut at Bath (5f; firm) and ran accordingly when finishing fifth of five. Very unlikely to get involved.

Verdict

An opening maiden in which the three standout contenders are hard to split. Rose Bandit made a very pleasing debut when surprising a few people to finish third over C&D. She did very little wrong then and finished behind a couple of runners with experience. After being turned over at 1-5, Asmund probably had excuses on the ground when second at Carlisle. The forecast good to soft should be much more to his liking but he may have to play the role of bridesmaid once again to SPYGATE. The selection has posted a pair of respectable efforts at Thirsk, and with the drop to 5f firmly in his favour (has good early pace), he can get off the mark at the third time of asking.
