For a horse that stays so well on the Flat she's only had limited chances at staying trips over hurdles. Ran with great credit last time when bumping into a thriving in-form rival at Market Rasen; nudged up 4lb but still competitive in this.

Found some further improvement on his second run back from a wind op to resume winning ways on his handicap debut (runner up finished weakly). 6lb higher for that win but yard was in a slump at the time (better form now); more to come.

Returns to action from a significant absence having landed consecutive Hexham novice events (May 2018). That level of form came to an abrupt halt on her handicap debut (also at Hexham) over this sort of trip; questions to answer on comeback.

Gained an easy win in a weak maiden at Perth over a year ago and for the most part has struggled in handicaps over trips shorter than he tries here. Stopped the slide to a certain extent last time; mark looks attractive if he can make use of it.

Dual C&D winner those two wins coming in consecutive races nearly two years ago and for the most part it's been something of a struggle since. His slump continued when last seen and he's eligible for much easier tasks given his current mark.

Verdict

Don McCain takes the opportunity to run a couple in this with Morraman very much the pick of his duo and even off this mark he could well have more to offer looking the type to progress further over hurdles. Altruism has clearly been prepared for a summer campaign which is more than likely to see him appear at Cartmel several times and his last run will have set him up nicely for this; he’ll be dangerous if allowed an easy lead (his last three wins here have come from the front). BECKY THE THATCHER must come into the reckoning though after her last two efforts showing that staying trip and a good test are very much her game.
  1. Becky The Thatcher
  2. Morraman
  3. Altruism
