Group 2 winner at the Curragh last year and ran well in defeat in two subsequent Group 1 races, shaping like a step up in trip was needed. Had excuses in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last time (drawn wide, hampered) and sets the standard here.

Improved from debut to win his next two starts and only beaten ½L in the Derby trial at Epsom last time; shaped like the step up in trip would be in his favour that day and open to improvement here.

Showed plenty of promise in his first two starts before bolting up in a maiden at Salisbury last time. The form of that contest looks suspect but couldn't have done any more and proven from a stamina perspective for this.

Improved from Newmarket debut to win at Southwell earlier this month and that effort looks worth upgrading when taking in to account that he ran close to a strong pace. The form of that race hasn't been done any favours since though.

Won two of his six starts as a juvenile and put up a big effort when stepped up in class at Newmarket when last seen. Will need to improve for the step up in trip and mixed signals in his pedigree whether that could happen.

Steadily progressive so far, winning a maiden at Goodwood on fourth start before finishing runner-up at Bath last month when only narrowly denied. A little more exposed than most but not ruled out with another chunk of improvement.

Overcame greenness on debut at Southwell when a surprise winner and bolted up by 12L back at that venue last month. Hard to imagine he can maintain his unbeaten record in this event but stamina proven and no reason why he won't take to turf.

Shaped with promise when green on debut and plenty to like about his 7L Haydock win, keen in the early stages but barely asked a question and merely pushed out. More needed up in class but proven over the trip and on this ground already.

Won his first two starts but couldn't build on that when runner-up at Leicester last time. Marked improvement needed here.

14/1
One win from four starts as a juvenile and runner-up in a Listed event at Pontefract when last seen. Likely has more to offer over long trips this year and worth noting in the market.

Forecasts

Anthony Van Dyck (2/1), Cap Francais (9/4), Pablo Escobarr (6/1), Eagles By Day (7/1), Three Comets (14/1), Nate The Great (16/1), Themaxwecan (16/1), Ranch Hand (20/1), Severance (20/1), Hiroshima (50/1)

Verdict

St Leger winner Kew Gardens contested this race last year (runner-up) and while the yard have had beaten favourites in this race in the last two renewals, it's hard to see past ANTHONY VAN DYCK here. The son of Galileo looked as if he was crying out for a step up in trip last year and he sets a standard that will be hard to beat. Cap Francais should improve for the step up in trip while those looking for one at a likely bigger price might want to consider the Mick Channon trained Severance who couldn't have done any more when winning at Haydock last time out.
  1. Anthony Van Dyck
  2. Cap Francais
  3. Severance
