Course winner when taking a 2m novice hurdle (with Dan Skelton at the time) but has so far failed to impress for this yard in two starts (only completed in one). Handicapper not quick to release the brakes; help needed with the mark.

Took back-to-back novice hurdles in early 2018 (both over short and on heavy ground) but has shown very little since. Tried over fences the last three starts (not impressive in that sphere); now back over timber off a stiff mark.

Took a step forward with his form when landing back-to-back wins at Wincanton (2m5f) last October in straightforward style. Has shown precious little since though and remains 10lb above his last winning mark; has shown some quirks.

Still a maiden but two runner-up slots on his last two completed starts have given a sense that he is capable of getting his head in front over hurdles. Bad error at the last cost him last time (heavy ground); may be more at home on this surface.

All his best form has come on decent ground; pulled up when last seen on soft ground at Ascot. Been given a break and had wind surgery since then which may help including a return on quick ground; overall profile a little hit-and-miss.

Twice a winner on the Flat for Michael Bell a switch to handicaps over timber plus a longer trip worked the oracle at Ludlow (2m5f, good/firm) last time; forged clear. Handicapper has put him up 8lb, but there may be more to come.

Despite at time showing a rather quirky/temperamental nature he's managed to complete a hurdles hat-trick of late. There has to be a question mark as to how long he can hold things together especially up in grade off an 8lb higher mark.

Well backed he returned to winning ways over C&D in January in slightly softer conditions than he'll face today off a 7lb higher mark. Turned in two below-par performances since that win (in higher grade); blinkers (first-time) now reached for.

Forecasts

Neverbeen To Paris (6/4), Special Acceptance (4/1), Ballygown Bay (6/1), Malangen (6/1), Rebel Royal (6/1), King Cool (14/1), Mr Dorrell Sage (14/1), Jaisalmer (20/1), Full (40/1)

Verdict

There’s no doubt that Malangen has found himself of late but there’s no doubt that he has his quirks and questions must be asked if he can hold his temperament together in order to complete a hat-trick up in grade and off an 8lb higher mark. NEVERBEEN TO PARIS despite the 8lb rise for his Ludlow win is a much more appealing prospect on ground that he will enjoy. Special Acceptance deserves to win a race and will do if he can tidy up his hurdling while Mr Dorrell Sage showed last time that he’s working his way back to the form that saw him win at Fontwell. A wind op and better ground should enable Ballygown Bay to get involved.
  1. Neverbeen To Paris
  2. Special Acceptance
  3. Malangen
