£100,000 yearling; didn't exactly set the world alight as a juvenile (0-3), but has been gelded over the winter and the cheekpieces are also applied; possible there's more to come on handicap debut; trainer 6-17 (35%) at Newcastle.

Kept extremely busy over the winter, fast developing into a Tapeta specialist (5f-6f); got going late when chasing home a progressive rival at Wolverhampton last week; holds every chance off the same mark tonight.

Kept decent company as a juvenile at the likes of Newmarket and Ascot (6f-7f) without ever threatening the principals in any of his three starts; plenty more required on AW/seasonal and handicap debut; bred for stamina rather than speed.

Joined this trainer from Charles Hills for 9,000gns in February; slowly edging down the weights but now a nine-race maiden; seemingly has plenty to find with Klopp on 5f form at this track earlier in the calendar year.

Verdict

A guessing game as to how much improvement can be generated from those with the fewest miles on the clock. The likes of Bugler Bob, Magical Spirit and Stallone are certainly worth considering, but the very tentative advice is to opt for MASTER MATT. He progressed from race to race throughout his juvenile career, finishing the season with a narrow defeat at Yarmouth. The promising 7lb claimer Cieren Fallon takes the mount, with the selection being a first-ever runner at this track for the Newmarket handler Denis Quinn. For those favouring a safer each-way choice, the proven Tapeta specialist Klopp rates as virtually impossible to keep out of the frame.
  1. Master Matt
  2. Klopp
  3. Bugler Bob
