Horse A-Z
Sold for 5,500 guineas after his debut from Ed Walker's yard; shaped well on debut (Chelmsford, 6f). Still green on first run for this yard (failed to build on debut promise) on Tapeta this time; Fibresand debut, difficult task.

Trainer does well with this type on Fibresand even on debut; pedigree reads well with the dam a three-time 5f AW winner. Cost €42,000 as a foal and expected to go well on her debut with any market confidence worth noting.

Twice run with some promise (well found in the market on debut) at Newcastle, looked to need the run both times. Kept to 6f after he made his debut over 7f (faded late on); first taste of this unique surface.

Most experienced of these but continues to frustrate (looks a quirky sort; refused to enter the stalls here once). Last two runs here over 5f have only underlined his foibles (tried in headgear); not one to trust, tries 6f for the first time.

Offered little on her only start so far at Newcastle over 6f (slow away, always behind). Now gets her first taste of Fibresand but looks to have a stiff task and others make more appeal.

Highly tried in all her three juvenile runs but her first two starts showed she had ability, her AW debut underlining that she may be at her best on synthetic surfaces (US bred). Absence to overcome but yard in form and good with sprinters.

Forecasts

So Hi Speed (7/4), Astro Jakk (3/1), Vikivaki (3/1), Muhallab (11/2), Easy Money (10/1), Opera Kiss (50/1)

Verdict

Robert Cowell is always a trainer to respect with his sprinters and he’s two-handed here with So Hi Speed and Vikivaki. There’s no doubt that the former has his quirks and it’s the latter that has the stronger chance if she matches the level she achieved last season especially at Ascot and she looks (on pedigree) as though she will be suited by this surface. Karl Burke has a good record here though and his ASTRO JAKK may just offer a little more at the price despite this being his debut. Muhallab isn’t out of this either having twice run with promise although it remains to be seen how he reacts to this surface.

  3. Muhallab
