Half-brother to Edwulf. Well placed to complete hat-trick over hurdles in back half of last season (2m-2m6f, all heavy). Market drifter prior to being pulled up on chase debut at Carlisle, his first start after wind surgery, but can't rule him out.

On a 17-race losing run since his sole success in a Southwell novices' hurdle in 2015. Becoming less consistent, but ran well last time when ½L second at Exeter (3m, good to soft). Up 3lb for that, so may have to settle for minor honours again.

Made steady improvement over hurdles last season, winning at Carlisle in April (3m1f, soft), when 11lb lower. Probably open to a bit more improvement now going chasing and could make a decent debut here.

Another who made steady gains over hurdles last season, winning a maiden event at Perth (2m4f, soft) in April. Disappointed when upped to 3m on good ground last time. Represents good yard and can probably make a good chase debut.

Brought along patiently over fences, eventually winning at Kelso (2m7½f, good) in May, when 7lb lower. Would have claims from this mark if able to get back to that level of form, but plenty to prove after his last two efforts.

Goes well here, both his career wins having been in 3m hurdles at the track. Looked likely to have gone close here on penultimate start, but for a blunder at a vital stage. Disappointed last time, but has a chance if he can bounce back.

Forecasts

My Old Gold (7/4), Grand Morning (7/2), Lough Salt (9/2), Abbreviate (5/1), Blue Flight (7/1), Crest (20/1)

Verdict

A race to treat with caution, given that every runner could win it on their day, but most have something to prove. Grand Morning, Crest, Blue Flight and Lough Salt all arrive on the back of disappointing runs last time, but all of them has the ability to go close if they can bounce back to their best. Abbreviate represents a trainer who does well on his raids here, but his lengthy losing run hardly inspires confidence, so it could be worth chancing MY OLD GOLD. She has a good chasing pedigree, while both conditions and trip suit, and her trainer's string is in a bit better form than the others in the line-up.
