Upped to 3m back from his summer break at Hexham (soft) recently, weakening quickly from the second last hurdle (pulled up); drop back in trip and sharper track favourable, but strongest form has come on deep ground.

Sole Pretender21
Age: 4|  Weight: 11-4| J: A E Lynch| T: N Lee| OR:  109
11/4
Ballinrobe bumper winner who has taken well to hurdling; made all when beating Stubborn Logic by over 4L in a Clonmel maiden (2m4f, good) three weeks ago; penalised accordingly; first GB jumps runner for County Galway trainer Norman Lee.
Cost €26,000 as a 3yo, and is a half-brother to the 2m6f-3m hurdle/chase winner Pawn Star; made all for a ready win on his second bumper start at Ludlow (2m, soft) in April; interesting hurdles debutante for a trainer 3-18 (17%) here since 1988.

3-33 on the Flat, with all of those wins coming in Ireland (1m1f-1m2f) for David Marnane; has disappointed continually since joining this trainer, with his official rating on the level tumbling to just 50; looks risky on hurdles debut.

From the same mare as Renwick (Come In Moscow); cost €46,000 as a 3yo, and has performed with credit on all three starts in Irish PTP's for previous handler Colin Bowe; best effort over 3m at Moira in April; rules/stable/hurdles bow.

Bought for £40,000 in May (Cheltenham Sale); 2-7 in Irish PTP's for James Joseph Mangan, including when a 10L winner at Ballindenisk (3m); trainer 2-15 (13%) at Carlisle since 2009.

Hasn't looked to be the most proficient of hurdlers so far, and is likely to be toiling towards the rear; 150/1 when pulled up before the fourth last at Hexham (2m4f, good to soft) 12 days ago.

Forecasts

Imperial Aura (5/6), Sole Pretender (11/4), Renwick (3/1), Trio For Rio (4/1), Relkadam (10/1), Arctic Vodka (18/1), Jack Riddell (20/1), Tanrudy (28/1), Pullman Brown (66/1), Mah Mate Bob (100/1), Wagner Klass (300/1)

Verdict

An interesting looking novices hurdle to kick off the Carlisle action, where all of the hurdle races will take place on the inside track. Plenty of the leading yards are represented with the Greatrex/Sheehan combination responsible for the rules newcomer Trio For Rio (a £40,000 purchase). Dan Skelton saddles Renwick who was beaten by a fairly useful sort on hurdles debut at Towcester in May, whilst Kim Bailey (a rare visitor to these parts) saddles IMPERIAL AURA in the silks of Imperial Racing. The tentative selection was a bumper winner at Ludlow, so should handle this tight circuit well, but the strongest overall clues should come from the early market exchanges.
  1. Imperial Aura
  2. Renwick
  3. Sole Pretender
