Promise in three maidens was turned into a winning handicap debut at Newcastle over slightly shorter where he thrashed them hollow, and 9lb rise is fully deserved. Stays this trip and with further improvement likely, looks the one to beat.

Looks a thorough stayer based on his Newcastle win in January, where he rallied after getting outpaced, but not seen since then. Gelded in the meantime too, and blinkers today, both of which sound a slight warning shot.

Going the right way and improved again for the step up to 12f at Newmarket last time, staying on well to lead late on and showed a good attitude to fight them off. Every chance this extra 2f will bring about a bit more, and not easily ruled out.

Winner at Redcar in May but that was over 10f and he's got ground to make up on Ashington on their Newmarket form last time out. Not a given he will improve for the extra distance either, and others make more appeal.

Twice a winner in the spring (including here in June) but two efforts since then rather suggest he's gone off the boil. Didn't seem to get this trip at Chester last time either (although not settling didn't help) and plenty to prove at present.

Forecasts

Surya (5/4), Ashington (2/1), Nibras Galaxy (5/1), Winds Of Fire (8/1), Quantatmental (12/1)

Verdict

SURYA surged clear of his rivals at Newcastle last time and, having shown that he stays this trip the time before when second at Goodwood, looks the one to beat. There's plenty more to come and he can take this en rote to better things. Ashington looks the danger after a hard-fought win at Newmarket, with Quantamental taken to finish third. Hard to know what to expect from Winds Of Fire after an absence, especially having been gelded in the meantime.
  1. Surya
  2. Ashington
  3. Quantatmental
