Clearly benefitted from wind surgery to score in decisive fashion at Southwell last week, winning with plenty in hand. Same rider on top today, which is a plus, penalty to carry but every chance of the follow up, as he looks a fast improving type.

Couldn't have done the job any easier when scoring over fences at Leicester in December and looks well treated enough on that, but two lesser efforts after that and hard to know what to expect here after a short break. Risky.

Already coming down quite quickly in the weights after a series of moderate efforts in handicaps, never in the contest latest start and given his efforts on quicker ground leave a bit to be desired, is easy enough to pass over here.

Found a weak contest to win at Fakenham in December and now back on the same mark, so no qualms on that score, shaped a bit better on latest start but not the most consistent and no guarantees he'll go on from that.

The Mad Wellt122
Age: 9|  Weight: 11-7| J: Patrick Cowley| T: K Bishop| OR:  100

Not beaten far in a similar handicap to today's at Exeter last year and now some 10lb lower, so looks on a dangerous mark. However, quicker ground has not brought the best out in him before, so best to wait for another day before giving him a try.

Just two wins in 33 starts but one of those did come here, so handles the track well enough. First start for new yard here, but this trip a step into the unknown and he needs to find plenty more.

Have to go back to 2015 to find the last time he got his head in front, although there's the odd decent effort to make you think he can win another when it all falls right. Good jockey booked, and may go well with tri and ground both ideal.

Went close on the Flat at Chelmsford in March but that was over a mile, and back over hurdles today may well struggle to stay this trip. On that, not hard to look elsewhere for the winner.

Scrumpy Boy13
Age: 6|  Weight: 10-1| J: Daniel Sansom| T: B Barr| OR:  80
12/1
Not done much in 11 starts but did shae much better at Warwick latest and didn't fade out of it until late in the piece. Tongue tie on there is missing today, but wouldn't need a huge step forward to take a part in a weak contest. Worth considering.

Gaelic Flow26
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-0| J: Bryony Frost| T: C J Down| OR:  79
11/1
Well beaten on three starts in handicaps so far and hopes rather pinned on this better ground to produce a bigger effort. Yard can land a punt, so worth a glance in the market, but an unlikely winner at this stage.

Forecasts

The Flame (1/1), Mr Mafia (4/1), Gaelic Flow (11/1), Scrumpy Boy (12/1), Mamoo (12/1), Kilronan Castle (12/1), Catcher On The Go (18/1), The Mad Well (33/1), Rocket Ronnie (33/1), Tidestream (33/1)

Verdict

Plenty of these have something to prove at present, but not THE FLAME, who won decisively at Southwell on his latest start and is clearly going the right way now. A repeat of that will take him close. Scrumpy Boy did better on his latest start and if he can perform as well without the aid of the tongue tie here, may be second best. Tidestream has the assistance of the excellent Harry Read and may be able to get among the medals. Gaelic Flow appears to have little chance on what he's done but is worth a quick look in the market.
  1. The Flame
  2. Scrumpy Boy
  3. Tidestream
