Yet to get off the mark, but has shown promise several times and recorded his best effort so far on handicap debut at Doncaster (2m3½f, soft) last time. Drops in trip here, which is not certain to suit, so has a bit to prove from same mark.

Scored over C&D (soft) in November, but didn't appear to get home when stepped up to 2m5½f at Exeter for handicap debut last time (despite having won a point-to-point). Same mark today and drops back in trip, which could see him involved again.

Coming along nicely over hurdles and best effort so far was when third to a decent prospect at Ayr (2m, heavy) last month, at 50-1. Tongue-tied now for handicap debut from what looks a fair mark based on last run and is interesting.

Completed a hat-trick over fences/hurdles in the autumn, the two hurdles wins being over C&D on soft/heavy. Blotted copybook since with only one completion, over fences. Pulled up over hurdles from 2lb higher last time. Bit to prove.

Won a Hexham handicap hurdle (2m, heavy) in September from a 5lb lower mark and has been inconsistent since from 2m-3m. Should be better for the return to this sort of trip, but recent evidence suggests he is battling for a place in the frame.

Won an Ayr novices' hurdle (2m, heavy) 13-months ago and bettered that effort next time when stepped up to 2m4½f. Been in reasonable form in handicaps on last two starts and has each-way claims after another 1lb drop.

Has won here over both C&D and 2m3½f, with all four career wins being on heavy. Powers on the wane in past year or so and is another who probably has frame claims at best following latest 3lb drop.

Well held in all starts under rules so far. On a positive note, the best of those did come at this venue (2m4f, soft) in December. On what we have seen, his initial handicap mark looks plenty stiff enough, so headgear needs a very positive effect.

Scored over C&D (heavy) two years ago in novices' company, but unable to add to that since. Back in better form in December, when making frame here from today's mark and enters calculations today in first-time cheekpieces.

Has shown a bit of promise in a couple of Hexham novices' hurdles, firstly for Phil Kirby and more recently on debut for this trainer. Mark looks stiff enough for his handicap debut, however, and a watching brief is advised.

Catterick specialist, though he has also won here over C&D (soft) four years ago. Still 4lb higher than his most recent winning mark and he is another who probably has place claims at best, given recent form.

Well held in all four hurdles starts so far, three of them here. Marginally, his best effort came over C&D in November on soft ground, but while it doesn't look as though he is too badly treated for handicap debut, other are preferred.

Forecasts

Copper West (15/8), Dakota Grey (6/1), Cesar Collonges (13/2), Glingerside (8/1), Barrys Jack (10/1), Pistol (12/1), Take A Break (12/1), Snowed In (14/1), Chasseur De Tete (22/1), War Joey (33/1), Captain Black (33/1), Beau Sancy (150/1)

Verdict

It looks as though there may be a number of these involved in the battle for the minors, given how exposed they are. Those include Snowed In, Pistol, Glingerside and Take A Break. Dakota Grey is interesting in first-time cheekpieces, while both Copper West and Cesar Collonges can have cases made. However, the suggestion is CHASSEUR DE TETE, who took a good step forward last time and on that evidence is on a workable mark for his handicap debut.
  1. Chasseur De Tete
  2. Cesar Collonges
  3. Glingerside
