Tanarpinop118
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-13| J: Sean Quinlan| T: J Candlish| OR:  121| C
13/2
A three time winner over hurdles, including on handicap debut over an extended 2m3f here in January 2016. Yet to quite prove he stays this far, but easing in the weights and ran well at Doncaster (third) latest. Cheek-pieces applied.

Horse silk
Buckle Streetp,t30
Age: 4|  Weight: 11-12| J: Harry Stock(7)| T: M Keighley| OR:  120
14/1
Beaten a neck off a 1lb lower mark at Worcester in July, and has contested better races with a degree of credit since. Most likely has very little room for further improvement off this mark but merits respect nevertheless.
3
Horse silk
West Of The Edge47
Age: 9|  Weight: 11-11| J: Charlie Hammond(7)| T: Dr R D P Newland| OR:  119| D
5/1
Improved since switched to this stable and won three of his five starts last term (all over fences). Placed over hurdles at Sedgefield in November, and stays well, but this is very much 'Plan B' following the loss of the Borders National.

Askamore Darsib18
Age: 8|  Weight: 11-9| J: Theo Gillard(7)| T: D McCain Jnr| OR:  117
10/1
Won a similar long distance handicap hurdle for this rider at Sedgefield in March (3m3f), but races off 7lb higher in the weights here. Closely matched with Tanarpino based on their latest clash at Doncaster.

Lough Salt62
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-9| J: N D Fehily| T: R C Guest| OR:  117
7/2
Back over hurdles for just his second start for this stable when winning at Wetherby in October (3m good), and a 3lb rise for that success looks relatively fair. No reason as to why he can't follow up.
6

U Name It20
Age: 9|  Weight: 11-7| J: Dale Irving(3)| T: R M Smith| OR:  115
50/1
Has looked a shadow of his former self since returning from a lengthy absence in October. However, the handicapper hasn't taken it too easy on him just yet, and a drop of a few more pounds certainly wouldn't go amiss. Stays well.
7
Horse silk
Classical Milano38
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-4| J: Jonathon Bewley(3)| T: G Bewley| OR:  112
16/1
Won a Hexham maiden hurdle (2m7½f, good) in April, but handicapper has more than had his measure in two starts this autumn. Has fallen 5lb, so could do better, and lightly raced overall isn't one to totally dismiss yet.

Pokora Du Lys29
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-1| J: Harry Skelton| T: D Skelton| OR:  109
10/1
A maiden on the Flat and over hurdles when trained in France (unraced for Nicky Henderson in GB). Modest at best since joining this stable, but allowed to need his latest effort (first run for 11 months). Down 5lb, and up 1m in trip.
9
Horse silk
Katy Royal32
Age: 5|  Weight: 10-13| J: Joe Colliver| T: C W Fairhurst| OR:  107
13/2
Improving mare who caught the eye of the stewards at Newcastle latest, staying on under hands and heels riding (rider subsequently given a 10-day ban) to get within a head of Mary Eleanor. Every chance over this longer trip from a similar mark.

Swantykay41
Age: 8|  Weight: 10-12| J: C O'Farrell| T: F P Murtagh| OR:  106
16/1
Has now had four starts for this trainer (all over fences), and has continued to regress. Switched back to hurdles for the first time since September 2016, and that looks an obvious approach as he seeks to regroup/rebuild.

Professor Plumv19
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-7| J: Craig Nichol| T: R Dobbin| OR:  101
10/1
Dual bumper winner who isn't fully exposed over hurdles despite failing to progress. The visor was applied latest (retained), and that coincided with a slightly improved effort, so some scope for further improvement off a falling mark.
12
Horse silk
Aramist31
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-6| J: Henry Brooke| T: Sally Haynes| OR:  100
10/1
Got to go back to 2015 to find his last Flat win, and although not disgraced over hurdles at Wetherby last month (and will enjoy this longer trip) he lacks much experience over timber and might need more time. Handicap debut.

Forecasts

Lough Salt (7/2), West Of The Edge (5/1), Tanarpino (13/2), Katy Royal (13/2), Pokora Du Lys (10/1), Aramist (10/1), Professor Plum (10/1), Askamore Darsi (10/1), Buckle Street (14/1), Swantykay (16/1), Classical Milano (16/1), U Name It (50/1)

Verdict

A competitive staying handicap hurdle in which a case can be built for plenty of the runners, including October's Wetherby winner Lough Salt, the easing in the weights and first time cheek-pieced Tanarpino, and the recently visored Professor Plum. However, KATY ROYAL has looked a winner in waiting on more than one occasion, and the handicapper has been surprisingly lenient with her following her latest start at Newcastle. Joe Colliver produced an ill-judged ride that afternoon (later punished by the race-day stewards), and he'll surely be keen to make amends now over this extra half mile; albeit at a much less taxing track.
  1. Katy Royal
  2. Lough Salt
  3. Tanarpino
