Turned in his best runner for his former yard (Gavin Cromwell) when winning a Kelso handicap over 2m1f off a mark of 129 on his first run for them. Back to form last time out on first run for this yard over C&D and well handicapped on some of his old form.

Not seen out in this sphere since March 2015 at Ayr over 4f further off a 7ln higher mark on heavy going finishing third (found little at the finish). Only recently returned to action on the Flat after a two year break (well held both times); hard to know what to expect here.

Didn't shape too badly last time out at Catterick on his qualifying run for a mark over 2m3f (jumping wasn't fluent). Now pitched in to handicaps for the first time back in trip; mark looks fair and no more and may be worth watching in the market.

Quickly reverts to hurdles having run poorly over fences last time (went in snatches) although the cheekpieces are retained here. Very much unproven beyond 2m so this drop in trip may help but overall his hurdles form is poor as he tries handicapping in this sphere for the first time.

Failed to win in bumpers but did show some fair form (runner-up three times) and ran well enough after a break on her hurdles debut at Market Rasen in October (beaten by one who had plenty going for him). Failed to build on that run last time (race could have come too soon) and may do better now on handicap debut.

Failed to get anywhere near his useful Flat form (winner off 87) in his novice hurdles earlier in the year with a modest fifth the best he could manage. Got a lenient handicap mark in relation to his Flat form on the back of those efforts but has so far failed to take advantage and now dropped to a mark of 100.

Hood now goes on this one-time useful Flat performer when he was with Andrew Balding (win off 83) who has continued to regress and disappoint over hurdles. May well have needed the run on handicap debut (wore first-time cheekpieces) and quickly dropped in grade and the handicap.

A faller at the first on his only outing fir Dan Skelton there has been a little to work on in his two runs for this yard. Ran with a little promise over C&D last time out and he will have more chance now pitched into handicaps off this mark; one to be interested in.

Wot A Shot40
Age: 8|  Weight: 11-2| J: R D Day(3)| T: N G Richards| OR:  100| D
9/2
Won off a 5lb lower mark at Perth in July over 2m when handed the run of the race but has run with credit of late under different tactics. Caught further back than ideal at Huntingdon on his penultimate start and again took the runner-up slot last time over C&D when beaten by a stronger stayer.

Boy's On Tourh18
Age: 5|  Weight: 11-1| J: S Mulqueen(3)| T: Miss Lucinda V Russell| OR:  99
14/1
Has the look of a slow burner over hurdles despite not having shown much over obstacles so far. Ran with some promise last time out (not knocked around) and very much left the impression that there was more to come from him; makes his handicap debut here.

Richard Strauss19
Age: 3|  Weight: 10-10| J: A Nicol| T: P A Kirby| OR:  107
12/1
Winner of a Dundalk AW handicap over a mile off a mark of 64 when with Joseph O'Brien and failed to build on his debut effort over hurdles for that yard. Well held on his only outing at Wetherby for his new connections and now makes his handicap debut.

Did show some reasonable form in bumpers but appears to have gone the wrong way over hurdles and remains with little form in this sphere. Given her recent form best left alone even in this lowly company.

His debut run for this yard looked as though it might contain some promise (needed run) and he can be considered well treated on one piece of old form (not solid though). Failed to come on for that first run though last time (not settle; jumped right) and comes with risks attached.

Endeavor18
Age: 12|  Weight: 10-0| J: Miss Emma Sayer(3)| T: Mrs Dianne Sayer| OR:  81| CD
33/1
Unreliable type who has won over C&D and pops up now and again with a good performance off lowly marks. Has won twice this year over hurdles and fences (better over the latter); poor the last twice over fences though and now back over hurdles from 3lb out of the handicap.

Verdict

A low-grade end to the card but it is competitive and there are a few in this who might take a step forward for going handicapping. One of those would be Raised On Grazeon who has run consistently so far and her opening mark doesn’t look a harsh one. Wot A Shot is another who has run well of late and his yard are in good form – if he repeats his last run here then he’ll go close and should confirm his form with King’s Wharf. ROYAL MANDATE is possibly the most fascinating one of those making their handicap debut having shaped with promise over C&D last time. Bogardus and Boy’s On Tour are another couple that are bubbling under and worth watching as they head into handicaps for the first time.
  1. Royal Mandate
  2. Wot A Shot
  3. Bogardus
