Quickly improved on his opening effort over hurdles at Warwick in September when pushed clear from the last in a slowly run C&D contest to down the odds on favourite Desiremoi D'Authie by 1¼L. Tougher task under a penalty.

Made a winning start over hurdles when an emphatic 32L scorer at Fakenham in October (2m good). That contest lacked any real depth, but he clearly is a horse with a raw natural ability for jumping, so is much respected under a penalty.

17 race maiden, but with a respectable level of C&D form (in maiden hurdles). Fell at the first here latest, and in truth this type of contest isn't the ideal race for him. Stronger in handicaps.

Finished ninth to the ill-fated Fayonagh in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham in March (favourite), so can only be considered a disappointment on hurdling bow at Uttoxeter last month (2m soft), despite finishing a close up fourth to Midnight Shadow.

Modest on the Flat, despite winning five races from 57 career starts. Shouldn't be anywhere near good enough against these rivals on hurdles debut.

French Listed winner in 2014 but beaten miles in both starts over hurdles since gelded and switching to current yard and impossible to fancy him on recent evidence.

A standing dish in the early days of AW racing at Newcastle for previous trainer Richard Whitaker, but hasn't shown his best form in 2017 despite twice moving yards. Hurdling didn't look his game at Worcester, and little chance today.

The sole filly in the line up, this unraced Milan fifth foal is out of the bumper and 2m1f hurdle winner Wyldello. Her dam was a sister to the classy Marello, so it's no surprise that she cost €50,000 as a three-year-old.

Verdict

Despite containing a couple of previous hurdles winners, this contest has cut up somewhat since the initial entry stage, largely attributable to the forecast quick conditions. Canyon City ticks all of the boxes based on his recent C&D success, but he has a penalty to carry now, and the concession of 6lb to his elder CAUSE TOUJOURS, and indeed 13lb to the sole filly Maronette is certainly no easy task. The Dan Skelton trained selection was slightly disappointing on his hurdles debut, but it's still early days over obstacles, and he's given another chance to deliver on the clear promise that he showed in bumpers.
