Keen throughout, but galloped clear between the final two hurdles when beating Ramonex by 10L at Aintree in May (2m1f good). Penalised, but open to further improvement on his seasonal return.
Moderate on the Flat (maiden), and pulled up on his hurdles debut over C&D earlier in the month. Needs to settle better in order to see out this trip over hurdles.
Frustrating on the Flat, but finally off the mark at the 25th attempt in a Beverley seller in August (1m4f). Left Ivan Furtado subsequently and makes his hurdles debut for a new stable.
Cost £31,000 at Cheltenham in December 2015, after taking a 3m Glenbane maiden the previous month. Absent until his recent return at Exeter (fifth to Master Work), and will surely be stronger in terms of fitness for that outing.
Ex Irish, and a 3m Monksgrange maiden point-to-point winner in March (yielding). Likely to find plenty stronger on just his second start under rules; stable and hurdles debut.
Cost €295,000 in November, following his 1m4f+ bumper success at Deauville the previous month. His new owner also purchased the runner up in that contest (Demon D'Aunou), and he was an impressive winner at Market Rasen recently.
€15,000 foal, but a €100,000 three-year-old. Unraced second foal by Beneficial out of and unraced dam (Subtle Hint). She was a half-sister to various winners, so hopes will be high that this newcomer can shape with some promise.
Not shown any obvious signs of ability so far, but did appear fairly green when staying on to take a remote fourth of 12 on just his second hurdles start at Worcester in July (2m good).
Shown little in point-to-points or under rules, and was well beaten on his handicap debut at Southwell in April, so couldn't be considered against much more promising rivals.
A half-brother to French winners Force Ailee and Iron Ryan this four-year-old isn't necessarily bred for the jumps. However, he debuts under rules for a leading trainer after finishing third in an 3m point-to-point at Inch in April (for Colin Bowe).
A six race maiden over hurdles, but has performed with credit on numerous occasions earlier in the year, earning a mark of 124. Beaten just under 6L when third to Chesterfield in a Class 2 handicap at Aintree in April (2m+ good).
Bred for stamina, but has cut little ice in recent spins at Uttoxeter (2m4f novices, 2m maiden), and a similar showing is expected today. Stronger once handicapped and upped in trip.
Forecasts
Dostal Phil (4/5), Zalvados (7/2), Turtle Wars (5/1), Whatmore (13/2), D'Arcy's Sound (33/1), Mad For Action (33/1), Bridey's Lettuce (50/1), Doc Carver (80/1), Oregon Gold (200/1), Candlelight Story (200/1), Shininstar (200/1), Baileys Galaxy (200/1)
DOSTAL PHIL is the obvious eye-catcher in the field having been bought by JP McManus for €295,000 in November 2016 after winning on turf at Deauville (1m4f+ good) the previous month. The runner up in that contest Demon D'Aunou was also acquired by McManus for a significant sum, and he hacked up on his UK debut at Market Rasen earlier this month. Hopes will be high that Dostal Phil can be Cheltenham bound come March, and if that's to be the case, he should be a fairly clear cut winner in this company.
