On the same mark as when winning a 0-140 here over fences at a similar trip 11 months ago and scored from 7lb higher next time. In handicapper's grip in that sphere. Not as good over hurdles, but couldn't rule him out if he can run to his best.

Lightly-raced since joining this yard ahead of last season, when he won two out of three including over C&D (good to soft). A stone higher now after scoring when last seen. 8lb rise for that makes this tougher and jumping will need to have improved.

Last four wins have been over fences at around 2m when with Philip Hobbs, the most recent of them from today's mark at Worcester in June. Conditions are ideal for him, though he was beaten here over 2m1f last time and not sure longer trip is ideal.

Scored over C&D in February (heavy) and was the easy winner of a Hexham chase (3m, good) from just 3lb lower when last seen in May. Cheekpieces worn for last five races left off for this reappearance. Claims if fit after a break.

Won by 18L at Uttoxeter (2m, good) in May from 13lb lower and the rise to this mark saw him returned to novices' company for his last two runs. Will need to improve to win again from this high now back in a handicap.

Stays beyond 3m, though seems most effective over Kelso's 2m6½f, a trip at which he produced a career-best when winning in February. 5lb higher today and his CV suggests that this is still a few pounds too many.

Forecasts

Theatrebar (11/10), Apterix (11/4), Vancouver (13/2), Tomkevi (9/1), Ink Master (9/1), Forty Crown (28/1)

Verdict

Not an easy race to call with holes to be picked in the chances of all six of them and perhaps TOMKEVI could be the one. We know that he acts around this unique track and also that he can win on a sound surface, while he remains weighted to be very competitive. Apterix could have a squeak if able to put his best hoof forward, while course winner Theatrebar has to be respected, though he is likely to need to cut out the jumping errors if he is to succeed from this mark. Vancouver and Forty Crown give the impression that they are held by the handicapper for the moment.
  1. Tomkevi
  2. Theatrebar
  3. Apterix
