Largely inconsistent, but saves his best efforts for this track (career record 3,1,2). Beaten under 1L when third in this race in 2016, he was a subsequent 3L winner over 3m2f+ later that month from a similar mark (for Jimmy Frost).
Ex Irish (Alan Fleming). Made most to score by ½L on his debut for this trainer at Newton Abbot in August (2m5f good to soft) in what was a fairly weak race. Up 7lb, but his last run is ignored (hit the first, never travelling, lame).
Has struggled to get his head in front over fences, and is a ten race maiden who is rated 20lb below his hurdles mark over fences. However, he never tends to be that far away, so with a talented claimer booked is dangerous if it all finally clicks.
In and out performer, but capable, and won twice (including under this rider) over staying trips at Kelso and Warwick last season. Tailed off behind Thegreendalerocket (13L second to Clubs Are Trumps) on his final start over C&D in April.
In fair shape early last term, winning over hurdles at Southwell (2m4½f, September 2016) but had clearly had enough come the end of the season (twice pulled up). Runner up at Worcester (2m7f) on his second chase start last month, but 5lb higher now.
Remains a maiden, but hasn't totally disgraced himself over fences in three starts. Beaten 1L by Bassarabad at Warwick in February (3m soft), he had the race at his mercy at Exeter on his next start (before idling) and should win eventually.
Progressed from the hunters chase ranks into handicaps and did okay from lower marks initially, winning by a neck at Wincanton in January (3m1f soft). However, that progress slowed, and he's tough to fancy on his more recent efforts. Seasonal bow.
Veteran who last scored in December 2015, and despite a falling mark, he probably hasn't got the legs to compete nowadays. He does have C&D form (for this rider) in the past, but finished a couple of places behind Thegreendalerocket here in April.
Both of his chasing successes have come on decent ground at this track (C&D in November 2016, and over 3m2f in April 2017). He remains 9lb above his last winning mark, and hasn't run over fences since. Had a recent hurdles spin, so possibly sharper.
Most of his winning was done in France earlier in his career, and soft ground appears to help him achieve his strongest performances. Capable from this mark, but was only a well held second at Fontwell last month (2m5½f good to soft).
Never competitive switched back to fences from hurdles at Bangor earlier this month (2m4½f good) and whilst seeking to capitalise on a lower chase mark following his Stratford hurdles success in late August, he couldn't be supported with confidence.
A three time hurdles winner (twice over 2m7f at Worcester in the summer of 2016), but aged eleven now and unsuccessful in eight starts over fences. Falling in the weights, but a well held favourite at Worcester latest (fifth to Dotties Dilema).
Forecasts
Bacchanel (7/2), Wade Harper (4/1), Hedgeinator (5/1), Thegreendalerocket (7/1), Definitly Grey (8/1), Kings Cross (12/1), Mr Mafia (14/1), Who Am I (14/1), Paddy The Oscar (16/1), Bassarabad (16/1), Sonoftheking (25/1), Phangio (33/1)
Not the strongest of contests to round off the action, but a number of Chepstow specialists feature including Phangio and Thegreendalerocket. The former is high in the weights, whilst the latter, who was a narrowly beaten third in this contest in 2016 appears to have the better of the likes of Paddy The Oscar and Bassarabad based upon their April C&D clash. Definitely Grey has claims on his latest improved start over fences, and is relatively unexposed over the larger obstacles despite being 5lb higher today, whilst Wade Harper is very well treated if it very belatedly clicks for him over fences. However, BACCHANEL really ought to have prevailed at Exeter in March, and the fitting of first time cheek-pieces might just buck his ideas up enough to offset a 4lb rise in the weights for a head defeat by Zerachiel.
- Bacchanel
- Wade Harper
- Thegreendalerocket
