Has cleaned up over the summer winning five on the bounce over fences, including the Listed Summer Plate at Market Rasen in July (2m5f good). Faced little more than exercise gallops at Newton Abbot the past twice.

Smart in bumpers, but arguably didn't fully make his mark over hurdles despite winning three times (Carlisle, Warwick and Hereford). Plenty to find on hurdles ratings with these classy rivals now switched to fences for the first time under rules.

Progressed with every single start over hurdles, winning the Tolworth at Sandown in January, a Listed contest at Exeter in February and his crowning glory the Grade 1 Mersey Novices Hurdle at Aintree in April. Much awaited chasing debut.

Both of his successes over hurdles have come at Ludlow, most latterly over 2m5½f in April when beating Town Parks by 8L. In deep at the weights on his chasing debut, and needs a non-completion from both of the market leaders to score.

Forecasts

Finian's Oscar (1/3), Alcala (4/1), Aintree My Dream (10/1), Tintern Theatre (18/1)

Verdict

Alcala is much improved over fences, and has enjoyed a productive summer winning five on the bounce, including the valuable Market Rasen Summer Plate in July, but this contest is all about the much awaited chasing debut of FINIAN'S OSCAR. His progress for Colin Tizzard last term was nothing short of remarkable, and he rounded of the season absolutely bouncing with 2m4f Grade 1 novice hurdle success at Aintree in April, before being denied a double by just a short-head at Punchestown three weeks later (beaten by Bacardys). The sky promises to be the limit for him over fences, but he'll be tested to the max by a race-fit and gnarly keen racing Alcala who will almost certainly expose even the most minor of flaws.
  1. Finian's Oscar
  2. Alcala
  3. Aintree My Dream
