Just 2lb above his last winning mark over fences (Musselburgh January 2016), and switches back to the larger obstacles after an extended spell over hurdles. Not at his best lately but could be rejuvenated by a return to chasing.

Admirable veteran who was ridden out to hold onto a dwindling lead when scoring at Newton Abbot a fortnight ago (3m1f good to soft). Conditions should be fine and is a past C&D winner, but a 7lb rise looks rather excessive.

In good order late summer/early autumn 2016 notching a hat-trick of victories (2m5f to 3m1f+), but paid the price with a rise in the weights. Still 4lb above her last winning mark (Southwell, March 2017), and well below par when last in action at Fontwell in May.

Narrowly repelled by Boric in the Highland National (3m6f) at Perth in late April, so the handicapper continues to give this seven-year-old little respite. Ran to a similar level when third to Heist at Hexham (3m) subsequently and should once more run his race with conditions to suit.

Tends to flatter to deceive, but was good enough to win a couple of novice hurdles during the month of May. Stamina a worry over this trip and needs to significantly better his last two efforts over fences in order to play a hand.

Finished lame when fourth to Miss Conway here over a shorter trip early last month, but had previously made all to win by 2¼L from Honkytonktennessee over 2m4f+ at Southwell in June. Stays this trip, but remains 6lb higher than latest success.

A Tail Of Intrigueb14
Age: 9|  Weight: 11-9| J: N de Boinville| T: N J Henderson| OR:  111| BF

Hit the deck early when favourite for the race won by Strumble Head at Newton Abbot a fortnight ago after a previous solid effort at Worcester (third). Doesn't win all that often, but feasibly handicapped as a result.

Washed Ashore44
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-4| J: Aidan Coleman| T: J & A O'Neill| OR:  106

Produced an improved effort on his third start over fences when 4½L runner up to Da Baba Elephant over C&D in late June. Returns off the same mark, and this dual Worcester scorer over hurdles could play a hand.

Nowhere near the force of old nowadays, but has fallen in the weights and starts off life for a new trainer after leaving the care of Alan Brown. Unseated his rider at Kelso in May when last in action.

Pena Doradav169
Age: 10|  Weight: 10-11| J: Craig Nichol| T: A C Whillans| OR:  99| D
11/1
Cartmel winner back in 2015, but not able to get his head back in front since and the visor goes on for the first time this afternoon. His fourth to Hattons Hill at Hexham in May (beaten 25L) reads well enough, and this ground should be ideal.

Sirius Star27
Age: 8|  Weight: 10-10| J: Jamie Hamilton(3)| T: B Rothwell| OR:  98| C| D
20/1
His sole career success came at this track in May 2016 (2m5f) and he ran okay when third here in April 2017. However, not so good twice since and difficult to fancy accordingly.

Charlie Monv127
Age: 8|  Weight: 10-9| J: Charlie Hammond(7)| T: Mike Hammond| OR:  97| D
25/1
Made all to score in a determined manner at Huntingdon in May, but unable to repeat the trick in two subsequent starts. This track should suit his run style, but his career profile (1 from 21) realistically shows his level, and he remains 4lb above his last winning mark. Wears a first time visor (change of headgear).

Forecasts

Washed Ashore (11/4), A Tail Of Intrigue (4/1), Gold Ingot (15/2), Benenden (11/1), The Doorman (11/1), Pena Dorada (11/1), Mister Don (12/1), Strumble Head (12/1), Dawnieriver (14/1), Sirius Star (20/1), Charlie Mon (25/1), Rough Justice (33/1)

Verdict

An open looking contest in which the consistent Mister Don is again likely to run a solid race. However, he is paying the price for his consistency to the handicapper whilst the less reliable A Tail of Intrigue is more feasibly handicapped accordingly. Strumble Head was hit with a rather harsh 7lb rise for his Newton Abbot victory, so the much less exposed WASHED ASHORE might prove the best play. Lightly raced over fences he produced a much improved effort over C&D latest, and should prove competitive from the same mark this afternoon.
  1. Washed Ashore
  2. A Tail Of Intrigue
  3. Mister Don
