Won four chases for David Bridgwater, but three runs for his current trainer have yielded little encouragement. Cannot be fancied until showing a little more.
Never going the pace when pulled up at Aintree last time, and was beaten quite a long way when runner-up on his previous outing at Kelso. Needs to return to his best form to figure off this weight.
Has run consistently well since joining his current stable from Charlie Longsdon, winning once and being placed on his four other starts. Returned from a lay-off to finish third at Ludlow in February and although he has had another break since then, he is worthy of consideration given his generally-progressive profile.
Showed promise when trained in Ireland by Henry De Bromhead, but has not built on that for his current stable and has been tried in a novices' handicap chase, a novices' hunter chase and a handicap hurdle on his last three outings. Hard to know what to expect.
Won a Southwell handicap chase in June in decent style before flopping over the same C&D last time off a 5lb higher mark. Difficult to see him regaining the winning thread off only 1lb lower.
Formerly trained by Paul Morgan, he won the second of his three starts for this stable when landing a novices' handicap chase at Worcester. That was his only start over the bigger obstacles so it is no surprise to see him back over fences following his defeat in a handicap hurdle last time.
Has run respectably in three handicap hurdles since joining his current stable from Richard Ford, but switches back to fences. Not obviously well treated, but the change may act as a stimulus and he is not ruled out.
Two falls in four outings over fences does not inspire confidence, but in one of those races he was in second place at this track when capsizing two out. Got round last time, which should have boosted his confidence, and remains a horse with the potential to be effective off this handicap mark.
Advertised his trainer's skill when bolting up at Stratford on his debut run for the yard yesterday. Has to be of serious interest if turned out again under a penalty, but would probably be sent off at cramped odds.
Only victory in 13 starts over fences came at Catterick in February, last year. He is inching down the weights, but even though he ran respectably at Market Rasen last time, others make more appeal.
Veteran performer who has won five of his 49 chases but, not surprisingly, is not the force of old. Hard to see him matching strides with some much younger rivals.
Forecasts
Daulys Anthem (8/11), Desertmore Hill (8/1), Mercian King (17/2), Swaledale Lad (9/1), Avidity (11/1), Zolfo (12/1), Bollin Line (18/1), Stormbay Bomber (33/1), Gone Platinum (40/1), Accessallareas (66/1), Walden Prince (66/1)
Should Daulys Anthem be turned out under a penalty following his easy Stratford win yesterday he will surely take all the beating. However, he will have had to recover quickly from those exertions and, at cramped odds, may be worth opposing. Desertmore Hill is 1-1 over fences and surely has more to offer, while Zolfo will be competitive off this sort of mark if his suspect jumping can be sorted out. The value, though, may lie with MERCIAN KING, who has impressed since joining his current stable and has proved he can run well following a lay-off.
- Mercian King
- Daulys Anthem
- Desertmore Hill
