Didn't get the clearest of passages when beaten ½L by Airton over C&D on Northumberland Plate day earlier this month. Up 3lb, but has previously won over this trip on Tapeta (Wolverhampton maiden) and likely to be on the premises.

A three time career winner who represents regular Newcastle race sponsor John Dance. Not yet won beyond a mile and yet to conclusively prove she stays this trip, but relatively unexposed on synthetics.

Looked a progressive filly when 1½L too good for Kullu in a similar fillies handicap over C&D in early June, but paid the price for racing too keenly at Ascot a fortnight ago. Should relish a return to this track, but races from a 9lb higher mark.

Stablemate of Renfrew Street. Raced prominently when 1L too good for Wotabreeze (1m4f good to firm) at Epsom on her penultimate start. Well beaten back at that track subsequently from a 4lb higher mark and now switches back to synthetics (previous winner on Tapeta and Fibresand).

Made the frame on all three starts in maidens as a three-year-old, rounding off that campaign over 1m2f at Nottingham in October (good) when runner up to First Voyage. Makes a belated return to the track for handicap debut, and is upped in trip for her first start on the AW.

Dead-heated with Airton on debut for this yard over C&D in December, and performed with immense credit from higher marks thereafter (edged out by Lac Leman over C&D in February). Back from a four month break with promise at Beverley in late June, and this race has surely been on the agenda since. Useful 5lb claimer a bonus.

In good order and clearly on the up winning twice at Hamilton during the month of June (at up to 1m5f on differing surfaces). Not disgraced under an inexperienced rider at Ayr latest, but raised another 2lb in this stronger contest. AW debut for a trainer that has supplied winners at this track on Tapeta.

Forecasts

Stoney Broke (7/4), Cape Peninsular (3/1), High On Light (6/1), Donnachies Girl (8/1), Bybrook (8/1), Marsh Pride (10/1), Star Of Lombardy (14/1), Renfrew Street (14/1)

Verdict

A competitive fillies handicap, with a number of likeable horses in the line up. Cape Peninsular was a shade unlucky in the run over C&D earlier in the month when beaten narrowly by Airton, but has been rather harshly upped 3lb since. High On Light thrives over this C&D and is much respected having posted a pleasing return from a break at Beverley last month, whilst the likes of Donnachies Girl (surface) and Bybrook (handicap debut) have minor question marks against them but the potential to progress further. However, STONEY BROKE is the most obvious selection. This lightly raced filly looked to be a horse going places when proving far too good for the well regarded Kullu over C&D in early June, and whilst 9lb higher now, a mark of 82 doesn't necessarily appear beyond her.
  1. Stoney Broke
  2. High On Light
  3. Cape Peninsular
