Looked potentially smart when scoring on debut at Newbury in April and progressed next time when third in this grade at Newmarket (1m2f, good to soft). Far from disgraced when beaten 3¼L by Dante winner Permian in the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, taking another step forward and looks the one to beat.

Comes here on the back of successive Class Two handicap wins at around 1m2f, a 6lb rise effectively returning him to this grade. Was found wanting on his only previous try in Listed company last season, but with hindsight that now looks like a blip and he should be very competitive.

Won a soft ground Yarmouth maiden (1m) on debut in October and despite not adding to that success, he has made progress in two of his three subsequent starts. Probably didn't stay 1m6f last time, so drops in trip and has blinkers fitted for the first time. May be able to resume progress.

Won three of his seven starts as a juvenile, including a Chantilly Group Three in October. Has failed to go on from there, but has run to a consistent level of form in Listed, Group Three and Group Two company. Blinkers now tried in the hope of eeking out a bit more and he should be thereabouts back at this level, although perhaps 1m2f is his optimum trip.

Won a maiden at Navan (1m2f, good to firm) in May and then beaten just over 2L in a Group Three, both when with Sheila Lavery. Changed hands for £260,000 at the sales last month after running down the field in the King George V Stakes (Handicap) at Royal Ascot and now has his first run for this top yard. Needs to improve further but very interesting.

Has won a couple of handicaps at Musselburgh and Ripon this term at up to 1m2f, but since held from this mark in that sort of company and she might just be a little short on class against some of these tonight.

Forecasts

Defoe (5/4), Call To Mind (85/40), Frankuus (5/1), Twin Star (14/1), Euro Nightmare (16/1), Monticello (16/1), Fierce Impact (20/1)

Verdict

This looks a bit better than your average renewal and that has something to do with the presence of CALL TO MIND, whose form behind Permian at Royal Ascot is the best on offer here and he is taken to score for Her Majesty The Queen. Defoe looks very much a progressive type and presents a danger to the selection, while Twin Star is the most interesting of the remainder. Further progress from Fierce Impact is not ruled out now back down in trip.
  1. Call To Mind
  2. Defoe
  3. Twin Star
