Not an easy ride as he proved at Aintree in June when the fast pace asked more of him at an early stage. Enjoyed a change at Bath three weeks ago when landing an 11f maiden. This looks easier than his last couple of races over hurdles and he is worth a check in the market.
C&D winner and closely matched with Rolling Maul on running here last year. Lightly raced since including a course victory over fences. Stable are 4-17 in past two weeks and 3-7 when this rider has been on board.
Record here is one win and three seconds from four starts. Has work to do from this mark but latest effort indicated he was ready for this longer trip.
Capable of a decent run when the mood takes him but he increasingly seems to save his best for Ffos Las and he's not as effective elsewhere. Handicapper not cutting him any slack either and others hold stronger claims.
Went on to face some difficult tasks after a winning spree last summer pushed his handicap mark beyond his capabilities. Remains 7lb above last winning mark and was woeful last time when sent off as favourite.
Received plenty of weight from Shantou Rock when upsetting him at Southwell in February. That rival won his next two starts by wide margins but he still looks to have more than his fair share of weight.
Without a win since December 2014 and beginning to look weak in a finish. Produced his best effort for some while under this rider last time and the winner has gone in again since. Likely to be thereabouts again but possibly not one for a battle.
Won a military riders event at Wincanton in April (only a pound higher here) but produced a dreadful effort at Newton Abbot last time, almost refusing early on. Tongue tie reached for now but after such an effort, can only be watched today, with trip an unknown too.
Forecasts
Rolling Maul (10/3), Slim Pickens (4/1), Luccombe Down (9/2), A Boy Named Suzi (5/1), Driftwood Haze (8/1), Buckle Street (9/1), Mr Shantu (12/1), Mighty Missile (20/1)
MR SHANTU and Slim Pickens are two course specialists who can be relied upon to produce a good effort. The former is closely matched with recent Bath winner Rolling Maul on running here last June and may have improved since. The trainer/jockey combination are in good form as a team at present and he gets the nod. Slim Pickens shaped last time as though he was ready for this trip and should be in the mix again. A Boy Name Suzi and Rolling Maul are capable on their day but they are becoming less frequent.
- Mr Shantu
- Slim Pickens
- Rolling Maul
