In fine form last year, culminating with a third placed effort on Champions Day at Ascot and started this year in similar form when taking a Group 3 here on the Rowley course. Too bad to be true last time out at York and worth giving another chance at the top level. A place probably the best he can hope for but trainer does well around here and he could bounce back.

Excellent effort on Champions Day at Royal Ascot when runner-up to The Tin Man (Brando third) but hasn't really gone on from that this season and unseated the rider last time out at Royal Ascot. Bit to prove now.

Career best effort when just caught on the line at Newcastle in a Group 3 last time out but needs to improve upon that form to have any chance in this contest and looks up against it.

Won a pair of Group 1s including this contest last year but things haven't gone to plan since a trip to the Breeders' Cup at the end of last season. Not beaten far last time out in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, but didn't get a clear run on that occasion. Has to be respected back over this C&D but this race probably stronger than last year's renewal.

Won the valuable Weatherby's two-year-old race at Doncaster two years back and produced a career best to land a 6f contest on the Rowley course in May. Not been in the same form in two efforts since though and up against it at this level.

Won a Group 2 at York before finishing an excellent second at Royal Ascot last time, just failing to reel in The Tin Man. Not been at his best on two previous efforts here though and may struggle to confirm the form with Limato from last time, while reversing the form with The Tin Man likely to prove equally as difficult. Needs a strong pace to aim at to be seen at his best.

Won his second Group 1 at Ascot last time when landing the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and had several of these in behind. Strong travelling type with plenty of speed and a game attitude and likely to go well again provided he handles his this track well enough.

Missed the break in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last time but stayed on strongly to land his second Group 1 and remain undefeated. Gives the impression there's still more to come and may be even better over 7f; provided he handles his first try on this course and gets a strong pace to aim at (pacemaker employed), he looks like the one to beat.

Won the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock before finishing an excellent second behind Caravaggio in the Commonwealth Cup last time at Royal Ascot, sticking to his task gamely. Likely to set a strong pace once again but suspicion is that he had his chance to beat Caravaggio at the Royal meeting, with his rival missing the break and he may struggle to reverse the form. Respected nonetheless and holds solid place claims.

Ran respectably in a Group 1 here last year but struggled a little since. Used as a pacemaker at Royal Ascot for his stablemate last time and likely to fill the same role here.

Forecasts

Caravaggio (10/11), Limato (4/1), Harry Angel (9/2), The Tin Man (7/1), Tasleet (9/1), Brando (28/1), Growl (50/1), Intisaab (66/1), Mr Lupton (66/1), Intelligence Cross (100/1)

Verdict

CARAVAGGIO may be up to maintaining his unbeaten record and with more improvement entirely possible, he's hard to oppose. Harry Angel ran well last time behind the selection and may take another step forward while Limato ran well last time out at the Royal meeting and shouldn't be ruled out of landing back-to-back renewals of this contest.
  1. Caravaggio
  2. Harry Angel
  3. Limato
