Useful juvenile who followed up his debut Newcastle success with victory at this track in August 2016 (both 6f). Largely consistent throughout the majority of his career since and in good form of late winning comfortably at Windsor last week. Tough to beat with claimer now taking over in the saddle.

Made all to run out a ready winner of a 6f maiden at Ayr in October 2016, but has disappointed in both starts this year (hasn't beaten a singe rival). The suspicion is that he isn't the most straightforward horse to deal with, and this stable are yet to truly fire this campaign.

Picked up unraced for £3,200 at Doncaster in January, and repaid that investment when making all to score by ½L at Thirsk (7f) last month. That was a muddling race and the form isn't overly strong, and this opening handicap mark might be a fraction over cautious.

Won a moderate 6f Ripon maiden on debut in June 2016 (good), and whilst not doing all that much wrong since has appeared held by the handicapper. Probably better suited by this trip as opposed to 1m, but doesn't look a winner in waiting.

Ran as well as could be expected against the talented David Simcock trained Hugin at Newcastle in May (7f) and although marginally disappointing over a longer trip at Ripon since looks to have plenty more to come now handicapping. Interesting.

Solid on the AW during the early part of the year and put her stamp all over a fairly moderate bunch when winning with ease over 7f at Newcastle in March. Made a reasonable if unspectacular handicap debut at Leicester in late May (7f good to soft) and this looks a reasonable contest for her level of ability.

Made it sixth time lucky when scoring on his seasonal reappearance at Pontefract last week (6f). Whilst that was far from a strong contest (Sheepscar Lad second) he appeared to be crying out for a step up in trip, so should be respected with a 3lb rise.

A six race maiden who is now fitted with cheek-pieces for the first time having dropped steadily in the weights in recent starts. Others preferred.

Forecasts

Parnassian (7/4), Fayez (9/2), Captain Hawk (9/2), Alfie's Angel (13/2), Saint Equiano (15/2), Rutherford (12/1), Bob Maxwell (14/1), Raselasad (22/1)

Verdict

With nothing as abundantly talented as Hugin in the line up, Bob Maxwell is the interesting handicap debutant on the strength of his pleasing effort at Newcastle in mid May. However, recent Pontefract winner Alfie's Angel should relish this combination of a longer trip and stiff uphill finish, whilst the top-weighted Windsor winner PARNASSIAN has already won over this track as a juvenile. He had a slight setback (hoof) after rattling up those opening two career successes, but he now looks well and truly on the way back to form, and it's an added bonus to have the excellent Clifford Lee taking 5lb off his back (Ben Curtis up last time).
  1. Parnassian
  2. Bob Maxwell
  3. Alfie's Angel
